Hi All,

Has anybody come across this before?

This morning I had a notification that my defender in Windows 8 was out of date and needed updating which I went ahead with.

After the restart I was presented with my login screen.

After logging in I get to the tiles screen but there are no tiles.

If I press the windows key + d I get to my desktop but the wallpaper is gone and I just have a black background with my Firefox icons etc but I can't run anything.

I can't start the control panel from the pc setting option when I move my mouse to the right of the screen but I can eventually get to the control panel if I go back to the desktop and start explorer.exe from the task manager. In the task manager there is nothing running which looks strange, I thought normally there would be lots of things listed as running

If I check my updates I can see defender was successfully updated this morning but I pretty much have an unusable system.

This happened not too long ago also and I ended up doing a clean install as I could not find a way around this and did not have time to find out what the issue was.

Can anybody help with this or am I basically facing a clean installation again?

I checked if I could go back to an earlier restore point but it tells me there are no restore points.

I also disabled defender for now to see if that helped but it's still the same.

Thanks and regards

I might have got around it.

I created a new account which logged in ok although it does seem slow to login.

I copied over any files from my old account then deleted that account.

Recreated the account and copied back my files and it looks ok now.

What I did notice after the upgrade and restart to defender is that it displayed the standard Windows welcome screens like after you do a new installation.
