Checking for Updates hangs after Disk Clean Up

    Hello,

When I run Check for Updates it just hangs. It says it is checking for updates and green progress bar is repeatedly running across, but nothing happens.

Before this problem arose I had just run disk clean-up including remove installation files and windows updates. The disk clean-up process removed about 59 GB including a large Windows.old folder.

I upgraded to Windows 8 from XP about 10 days ago. Windows update was working fine until the disk clean-up. I ran Check for Updates frequently after the upgrade to make sure I got all the updates, it worked perfectly well for both update and install.

I have tried Checking for Updates several times since running disk clean-up.

First time I ran it I had this error message: Windows Update error 0x8024a000 (only seen that one time)

I ran the Update Troubleshooter after that and it found/fixed the following:
Potential windows update database error detected 0x80070490 -Fixed
Windows update components must be fixed - fixed

The troubleshooter did not resolve the issue. I have run Check for Updates many times since with no more error messages, but it just hangs. When I run the Update troubleshhooter it fixes the same two issues as above.

Since the disk clean, Windows Update shows:
Most recent check for updates - Never
    Updates were installed - Never.

As my Windows Updates were previously all succesfully installed, the history must have been cleared.

No error messages have been seen since that first one which has not repeated.

Can anyone help me to resolve this please.

    Thank you.
    Hexie

Checking for Updates hangs after Disk Clean Up

    Hello again,

Problem seems to have resolved itself now.

I left Check for Updates running whist I spent time googling for info online today and I checked it again just prior to submitting my post. I reckon it must have been running over 2 hours. Last night I also ran it for hours several times with no success.

Strange just submitting this query to the forum has worked like magic!

The problem seems to have gone. It found a couple of small updates one recommended & other optional and I have downloaded & installed both with no difficulty.

I am assuming that now it has sorted itself out it will now behave.

    Regards
    Hexie

Have you ever run sfc & dism ?
    Sfc fixes problems.

Dism fixes the component store sfc uses to fix things.

If you wish, you can run this batch file that automatically runs sfc & dism & sfc again.
It takes 2 or 3 hours to finish.

You can leave it run in the background until it is done.

If you want to try it, download it & right click it & click Properties & Unblock it if need be.

Then right click it & click "Run as administrator".

Before doing anything with it scan it with your antivirus if you wish.
    It is completely harmless.

    Batch file download:

    Repair.bat

    Post back with results please.

A full screenshot of the command window would be nice.

You can drag the bottom of the window to make it taller so all the text shows.

Just press Alt+Print Screen to capture it.

Here is a picture of it when it starts:

    {I'm running it from a shortcut}

When it's done it should look similar to this:

    New picture:

Or it could look like this:

As a result of searching, I ended up on a thread that linked to this one. I tried the repair.bat and the results are:

    C:\Windows\system32>pause

This is my first post ever. I welcome constructive criticism. It will take several days to see if this makes a difference. Then I will reply as to the results.

    Impossible fix errors

Hello everyone, I was so pleased to find this post, and I am.

Unfortunately my Windows 8.1 laptop seems to be in an even worse condition: not even the .bat file works!

    The sfc says:
Impossible restore some of the damaged files found. The details are available in the CBS.log

    (I attach the log --- OOOH shut!!!! it's a 42 MB file!!! I can't)

    The Dism says:

Impossible to execute Distribution Images Management and Maintenance. No operations have been executed.

And then the sfc says the same error again.

    I also attach the screenshot.

    What can I do?

Thank you very much for your help!
I appreciate that.Click image for larger version
