    Update causing a big problem

    Hi,
I've got a brand new Asus complete with Windows 8.1. Everything was working perfectly, including the Quick Access Menu (left click at bottom left hand corner - I don't have a touch screen).
After a few updates this last feature stopped working and I was advised (amongst other things) to do a System Recovery. It worked.
Then... after the machine recovered from being sent back in time it got busy with a mega amount of updates and lo and behold the Quick Access Menu has gone again.
It's got to be a pesky update but which one. Does anyone know? Can I delete it so that it never darkens my computer doors again.
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Hoyt

The issue is we would need to see what set of updates you have installed. My system is up to date and I have not encounter the problem.

    Thanks for the reply,
In the meantime I have tried everything suggested on other forums, except radical ones involving recovery etc.,. After all the computer is fresh out of the box and shouldn't need the intensive care ward yet!
I have taken a screen shot of Windows updates installed since the computer began its life, as you asked for. I just hope that there may be one there that shouts "I am the trouble causer" to you.
    Thanks again,

    Hi D. M. Grier,

Have you had a chance to review the updates I sent for you perusal?
    Thanks

    Hiya Hoyt.
As others don't seem to be reporting the same issue I would personally uninstall the updates one by one starting from last installed, and check if the problem stops after each uninstall. it's a long process but I can't see how anyone here would know which update would be causing a problem for you that they don't have themselves.

Does Win+X still bring up the menu?

Have a look at this link for some detail of where the shortcuts in this menu are actually stored. It would be interesting to know if the folder's present or has disappeared.

So I looked through all the updates and I am not seeing anything in which is standing out. Unfortunately the way to get to the bottom of this is refresh the PC one more time. Then start to install the updates again, but this time only install one update at a time. Once you find the update causing the problem then we will no which one to remove and remain removed. Though honestly you might want to call Asus to see if they have heard anything about this problem with the Windows update as if this is a update problem then there is no reason why you would be the only one who bought this computer and having this problem. I would call Asus before doing yet another recovery and the painful process of installing one update at a time.

Thank you so much for that helpful advice.

Yes, I should have said right click. The menu appears but nothing happens when anything is selected except the shutdown at the bottom.

I clicked the link you supplied and found all the Shortcuts in all the groups. The only thing that was missing was the actual ini. file in each one so I would guess that without that the menu is never going to work.

How, or is it possible to correct this?

    Thanks,

    Hoyt
