Activation license key

I have a copy of 8 that I purchased during the initial pre release of this Operating system. I never used it until now that a friends mother was asking me about windows 8 so I told her I could let her try it on her XP system and see how she liked it and then if she liked it we could purchase a copy for her. Turns out she loves it, who knew.

Now that we are looking into this I am told that we would have to purchase the new software and reload it on her computer. I am hoping not to have to do this but I do want to keep my original cd's and license key. Another friend told me would could just buy the cd's or license key and enter it on the currently loaded system and that would release my original key back to me.

What's the verdict?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Ed

OEM or Retail? Retail can be transferred to another PC, OEM can't. The easy solution is to just buy a new copy of the same version you gave to her. Let her pay for it but you keep it. Then give her the other product code she already used. You use the new code. I'd keep the newer DVD's and give her the other ones. They will likely be identical anyway.

All three of the previous suggestions were excellent BTW. Here's a fourth for you to consider if you elect to recover your original installation disc or decide to buy a new 8.0 installation disk as previously advised:

Do a base install of 8.0 on your PC
Use the Windows 8.1 ISO download trick to obtain the Windows 8.1 ISO
Do a clean install of Windows 8.1 using the downloaded ISO
Activate the above using your Windows 8.0 key

If you decide it might work for you, then let us know and we'll help you fill in the blanks.

Good luck with your final decision.
