Black Screen after Updating for Windows 8.1 x64 Systems

Hi,

For the past few weeks I have been getting this weird occurrence every time I try to install & update my Windows 8.1 64x-based System. No matter what update it is (except for the security updates) I get a black screen whenever i reset my computer and log back in. The mouse just shows up periodically and seems to be loading something; based on the fact that the loading cursor is being shown. I've waited hours before and nothing shows up. Only way to get my computer back to working order is by loading a system restore point.

Any idea what could be causing this?

P.S. I should also note that a white computer icon shows on the bottom left of my screen after updating as well. It comes and goes just like my cursor.

Thanks in advance!

That sounds like display driver incompatibility.

That sounds like display driver incompatibility.

So that means I have a Display Driver not suitable for Windows 8.1? Because I get my Drivers from the AMD Website and I make sure I download the Windows 8.1 version. I also have "UxStyle for windows 8.1" installed (for my custom theme). So could that be causing it?

Which video card ? I had same issues with HD3850 and HD4870 GPUs. they required "legacy" drivers from AMD.

I have Crossfire'd 7970's, and what is a "legacy" driver? I am using 14.1 Beta Drivers as of now, but the problem originated when I got the 13.12 Drivers. I did a full uninstall of 13.12 and upgraded to 14.1. So it shouldn't be a corruption issue.

No, not legacy driver (4xxx and before) it should work with 13.2 without a problem. You might have an issue with Crossfire, why dont you take one out and try like that and than with other one. Check if .NET is up to date because CCC is heavily dependent on it.

The thing is though I've had this problem ever since I had one 7970 (bought my 2nd 7970 two weeks ago), so I wouldn't think Crossfire is a issue and I just checked if my .NET is up to date. I ran the 4.5.1 .NET service and got this window:

I am not up to speed with multi video card system because I don't think it's worthwhile except for Coin Mining or super high games on 3 or more monitor systems and for "ordinary" use there's usually a higher video card that can almost or i entirety replace two lover ones. For one, memory on 2 cards is not doubled but stays at amount one has. The speed does not double either and you are lucky to get 50% percent more that one of them which translates to even less of gain in FPS. Troubles like lag and microstutering are very common and drivers are flaky enough with only one, let alone two or more. By the time you get all the bugs worked out, you could have finišed two or more games on marginally lover settings where in the heat of playing would not even notice unless you stand back and watch in amazement what your hard earned money has brought you. Than an update to something else screws you up and you are back to square one. No, I would never recommend that to anybody who does not have nerves of high carbon steel. I would sell those 2 cards while they are still worth something and for that money get top of the line video card and use it in quite satisfactory fashion.

Doesn't solve my issue as stated above. Since I have had this issue before while only having one gpu, my multi-gpu set up is not the cause of this. Just trying to figure out why I am not able to install ANY major Windows updates.

Would that delete anything from my computer? Just wondering because I've spent over a week customizing how my computer looks (custom buttons, icons, etc) and I don't wanna lose any progress

Put 2 + 2 together and draw the very likely conclusion.
