Recently went through this same hassle on a computer of computers in my office. Was a pain in the butt to narrow down.
In my case, it was a new load, installing 40+ updates, and would get to 97% on configuring updates and then would simply fail and undo the changes and we would start all over again. It didn't tell me which update had the problem. Had to step through them ONE at a time.
