    License transfer confusion

Ok so I have 2 laptops, both came with windows 7 pre-installed, one of them I upgraded to windows 8 (retail upgrade).

Now I'm building a new PC desktop from scratch, and it's my understanding that I cannot transfer either one of those to the new computer. Is that correct? Just want to be sure.

That is correct. You are in OEM land and those licenses are not transferrable.

As that is a retail upgrade, transfer it and call MS if necessary to activate.

I suppose I could transfer the upgrade, but what would I install it on top of?

There is your problem. Your original systems were OEM (non-transferrable).

But you can try this. Maybe it works.

So I have one more question, would it smart to buy an OEM version of windows XP SP3? Several seemingly legit sites have it for $39.00. The way I see it I could keep my windows 8 retail upgrade and activate it with this-- could it work?

If so, would I have to install XP first?

    thanks
