    Error 0xc0000022 when trying to update Windows 8


    I have an HP that I cannot get to activate. I did a clean install and my login is an admin. I deselected installing Norton's during the reset but it was there when I booted up so I removed it with the Norton's removal tool. I tried activating by using the "Windows activation" from the search button and then tried by using an elevated command prompt of "slui.exe 4" but both ways gave me a 0xc0000022 error.

    Have you ever had Norton software installed on this machine?
    This error is often caused in Win at least by uninstalling Norton software, and not running the removal tool.

    Yes, it did have Norton's on it but I used the Norton's removal tool to uninstall. Is there something specific that Norton's breaks that I can fix or do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

    The usual problem in Windows 7 relates to the SPLDR service/driver - I haven't yet worked out whether there's a similar service/driver in Win8 (SPLDR doesn't exist)
    Let's see if Norton have been stupid....

    Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following commands

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\spldr /S
    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SPLDR /S
    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Legacy_SLSVC
    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Legacy_SPPSVC
    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\SPPSVC /S

    post the results.
    Here are some instructions to make life easier
    1) in Start, type 'Command' - a Command Prompt icon will appear, right-click on it and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

    I've resolved the problem. Apparently the "Reset" option which rolls back all of the apps and settings I was using on the HP did not fix it but the "Recovery" option that reformats the hard drive does.

    Not too surprising - you are probably now back at the same state in which your computer first arrived.

    You should take care in updating it and reinstalling your apps - ensure that you have a valid and up-to-date AV installed, and that you don't install apps until the Operating System is fully updated.
