Solved Avoiding Windows 8.1

Hi all. I'm new to the forum and have what is very likely a silly question to most of you. I hope I don't get laughed out of here..

I am also new to windows 8. Brand new, in fact. I just bought a crazy-expensive MSI laptop and upon arrival, I dutifully went about gathering all of the available updates and installing AV software and such. I also (luckily) created a recovery disk/flash drive. I installed all of the updates over a 2-3 day period and started noticing features that I thought I had just overlooked in the beginning. Come to find out, I had updated/upgraded to W8.1 without realizing it. This wouldn't have been a problem except that my laptop started having BSOD issues practically non-stop. To make a long story short, I found this forum while researching those issues and ended up refreshing my laptop, which rolled it back to W8, and all is well again. Not a single BSOD, my bluetooth is back up and running, and everything is perfect. Well, except that I cannot use Homegroup at all, but that's a separate (and minor) issue.

What I'm here to ask is how can I avoid inadvertently grabbing W8.1 again? I'm not sure if it was something I downloaded through Windows Updates, or if I got it from the store (which I don't recall having ever even looked at)?

I currently have something like 76 updates from windows waiting to be installed and I'm just terrified that if I allow them I'll end up with 8.1 again. I've looked at the updates and none seem to mention 8.1, but...I'm not so tech savvy, so I'm asking those of you that are. Any help is appreciated!

Shawn, Thank you. I did as you said and hid the KB2871389 update and all is right with the world again (my world, anyway). I feel a little sheepish for not knowing this, but hey...now I do. Thank you, thank you.

You're most welcome.

Hopefully they will have a newer driver available soon to allow you to update to 8.1 without issue.

Just a question, if I uninstall the update does that take me back to windows 8? Nothing but problems with the new 8.1.

Hello Diane, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Sorry, but no. You could refresh or reset Windows 8.1 to go back to Windows 8 though. :)
