Can't install windows 8 updates

So I recently built my own computer, and have been using it problem free for a while up to now. I realised the lack of computer restarts for updates, and I noticed that I have updates that need to be download. When I tried to download the updates, The progress seemed to stop. Thinking this was normal, I left the download to be. When I came back to it, It said that windows could not install the updates. What do I do to solve this? I really want to try windows 8.1

Hello Spectre,

I would suggest that you try to download and install "one at a time" until you encounter the specific one that is causing your issue. Now, once identified, you can give us the KB number and we can try to help you with a more targeted solution. Also, please provide your system specs during your next response as well. Good luck.

  2. From Troubleshoot computer problem screen, click on View all
  3. click on Windows Update and follow the instruction.

Please delete everything under this folder, these are the left over from previous Windows Updates and safe to delete:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
Then re-run the trouble shooter again.

I cleared out the previous windows updates and re ran the troubleshooter. I then tried to install the smallest sized update. the download seemed to be going fine until it reached 15%, then it froze and I get the error code 80073712. I then tried to install the other updates one by one, and I noticed that the progress always freezes at 15% then I receive the error code.

OK. let us try couple of commands:
  1. Win+X->Command Prompt(Admin)
  2. Type: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth <ENTER>
  3. Then Type: sfc /scannow <ENTER>

The sfc may require to run multiple times until you get the message: Windows did not find any Integrity Violation.

Then try Windows Updates again.

Good Luck !!!

Run the sfc /scannow command again and, this time, run this additional command right after completion:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

And make sure you place a "space" in between sfc and the backslash (/). Same for all spaces in the DISM command as well.

Good luck.

Did you follow the steps as suggested in post #8. Run DISM first, then SFC.

Just for the record, I always run the sfc command first so the information can be logged. That way, DISM has a reference for cleanup when using an external database (ie, Windows Update) as a reference. Now, it may work in reverse as well but I have never done it in that order.

There are lot of cases that sfc will keep failing unless dism is run first. And in this case, he ran sfc 5 times and still failed.

I have seen just the opposite. In fact, I have seen SFC report errors that were corrected by DISM. Listen, since I am usually wrong and you are not, I will just bow to your superior expertise in all areas and just say that you are right and I am wrong again. BTW, this will also be my last post in this forum because I've just about had it; period!

So, after joining on September 5th, and after 45 days of active participation, and after accumulating 443 rep points, I am now going to leave this forum to all those who are never wrong. Good bye and good luck! BTW, I will also turn on access to my profile so you can all see how stupid I have been with my frequently wrong suggestions.

I am sorry to be late getting back to you.
With sfc & dism commands failed. I suspect that your Hard Disk is corrupted so I suggest to run the chkdsk command first before retrying sfc & dism.

  1. Win+X -> Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. Type: chkdsk /r /f C:
  3. System will reboot and chkdsk will run

Warning: This process will take a long time (hours) depending on how badly it is corrupted. Please be patient !!!

Good luck

Need help with Microsoft 8.1 upgrade on HP 2000-2C11.
Back ground: wife's PC ( 8.0 OS) is used mainly for developing embroidery sewing projects which are then transferred to her sewingmachine. The SW is marketed byHusqvarna/Viking, which includes a Hasp (dongle) to protect unauthorized use. The software for the HASPs are developed as best as I can determine by SafeNet Inc. of Belcamp, MD. When 8.1 update is selected from the"Store" it D/L to almost it's conclusion, stops and asks for certain SafeNET APPS to be deleted in order to complete upgrade. Where are they??? They must be "hidden files" to normally prevent unauthorized use of the software. During the update the hasp is removed to prevent corruption. Viking offered a 6.1 software driver update but that did not help withthe MS upgrade to 8.1. problem, HELP. Thanks:cry:

Hey, thank you all for the replies. I entered the chkdsk command into the command prompt and rebooted my pc. The progress jumped from 2% to 27%, and seemed to freeze at 27%. I'll leave my pc on overnight and post results. thanks
