Windows 8.1 Upgrade crashed system entirely, repeat BSODs

Hi. I have a Toshiba laptop (Portege R835-P56X). I was running Windows 8 upgraded from Win 7. I successfully upgraded to Windows 8.1 but was having some problems with the Wifi. I followed the instructions to reset the TCP/IP Autotuning. When I restarted, Windows failed to start, and all repair & recovery options failed, so I cannot even access System Restore.

Windows attempts Automatic Repair then shows options to "Restart" or "Advanced Options" but I am unable to click either one--the keyboard and keypad are both completely non-responsive.

Unfortunately, I do not even have a Win 8 disk to use for a repair. I do have a disk image from just before I upgraded to Win 8.1. The problem is: how to access it?

I did a legitimate upgrade from Windows 7 and have a license for Win 8 with Media Center, but unfortunately cannot locate my original email, so Windows won't send me a Windows 8 DVD.

I'm tempted to simply restore to factory settings and Windows 7, which I'm running on my other PC without all these hellish problems. I hate Windows 8 anyway.

Any ideas? Anyone?

Did you also "create a rescue disk" during that 8.0 system imaging process as directed at the end of the process? If so, you can boot to that and use it to do a "recover from a previously created system image" option. However, if you did not, you mat be able to create a "recovery drive" in 8.1 and try to use it to recover your 8.0 image but I have found that process to be very selective when trying to use a recovery drive made on one version of Windows and trying to restore a different or earlier system image. However, since I have never specifically tried it under your current circumstances, I cannot say conclusively if it will work or not.

Good luck, hope this helps a bit.

I'm facing a similar problem here after upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 to my Lenovo Yoga13

After updating to Windows 8.1, my PC is unable to restart with the following message displayed:

1) Preparing automatic repair
2) Diagnosing your PC
3) Your PC did not start correctly

Here I am given 2 options:
a) Restart
b) Advanced Options.

Option (a) will keep me in the same loop. I have tried most of the options in (b) but nothing works out. The only extra clue I got is when I go to Startup Settings and select option 9)" Disable automatic restart after failure" from which an additional message was displayed:

error: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

I did not make any backup beforehand and now I'm hoping to restore to my previous setting without losing any files/data. Or it would be even better I could solve the problem without any restoration.

Please help. I cannot access to the Windows start-up anymore, not even in Safe Mode.

@joeboy: Hi, it might be best if you start your own thread because the recommendations may be somewhat different for your specific situation.

My problem is that when I get to the screen with options "Restart" or "Advanced Options", I am unable to select either one. The keyboard and keypad are completely dead, no response.

This occurs even with a borrowed Windows 8 disk.

I recall that back in the XP days, there were utilities that would boot in such a situation, such as Bootmaster. Is there any recommended utility like that for Win 8?

Never mind. I created a Startup Disk from EaseUS Todo Backup and used that to restore a backup disk image I had from a few weeks ago. Lost a few things, but not terrible. I think I'll stick with Windows 8.0.

I have a, somewhat, different problem. I get the BSOD when I restart, or shutdown. In fact, when I try to shutdown normally, it just restarts. That's a new one on me.

Immediately after I reinstalled 8.1, until I got the drivers al compatible, I was getting that all f the time. But today, after we did an update form Windows, it just flew into this new style rage.

What's up with this? Any ideas?

Simple fix. This driver to your Connexant modem is bugging the heck out of the machine:

Code:
1: kd> lmvm CAX_CNXT
start end module name
fffff800`0263a000 fffff800`02702000 CAX_CNXT T (no symbols)
    Loaded symbol image file: CAX_CNXT.sys
    Image path: CAX_CNXT.sys
    Image name: CAX_CNXT.sys
    Timestamp: Wed Oct 18 14:30:08 2006 (453672B0)
    CheckSum: 000BAB3B
    ImageSize: 000C8000
    Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4

See if you can download/install latest update from your motherboard manufacturer. If not or they don't have it, no sweat, I got ya covered.

This is one of the oldest video drivers I have ever seen in a crash dump:

Code:
atikmdag atikmdag.sys Thu Apr 05 18:37:54 2007 (46157A42)

Update from ATI/AMD's website.

Visit Realtek's site to update ancient Realtek lan driver:

Code:
Rtnic64 Rtnic64.sys Fri May 30 11:12:23 2008 (48401957)

Also update ENE card reader driver, from Acer:

Code:
ESM7SK ESM7SK.sys Mon Oct 24 23:38:28 2005 (435DA8B4)
ESD7SK ESD7SK.sys Mon Oct 24 23:38:31 2005 (435DA8B7)

There are a few other issues, but these are most important for now.

You can make this machine ok, but 8 is not a good choice for it. 7 is better.

I tried to install the Conexant Drivers and the message is that the device for it is not installed on my machine. Is this a modem driver? I have, from acer, a foxconn modem. So, if there is a Conexant driver, would that not bug the heck out of the machine?

Nah, it's probably Conexant made for Foxconn.

Open Device Manager. Find the modem. Right click it. Choose Properties. Go to Details tab. Change the dropdown to say "Hardware Ids".

Copy and paste to here the 2 or 4 lines shown, there.

Ctrl + A to select all.
Ctrl + C to copy.
Ctrl + V to paste.

Got a new problem:
I installed a second HDD in one of my systems, intending to install Windows 8 on it to install in another system. The install went great. It installed as a model of my other Windows 8.1 systems. Problem is, there is "no audio devices installed". I downloaded RealTek R2.73 HD Audio Codec directly from the site. As I have done since..., well, forever! This time, though, it doesn't work. When I restart the computer, and choose the Windows 7 Ultimate OS, the sound blares all over everywhere. Restart and select Windows 8.1..., silence. And the "X" on the speaker icon. Clicking on the icon, I get the dialogue box for "Sound" that says "No audio devices installed".

So, what's up with this?
