Solved How to move from 8 pro to 8.1 pro volume licenses?

Hello all,

I have a set of computers in a small business running win 8 pro volume licenses.

I noticed that the store doesn't seem to offer 8.1 as an update for these licenses. I even got a pop-up on one computer that asked me to upgrade, took me to the store, and left me hanging without an option to upgrade it.

Is there a way to put win 8.1 pro on these computers without a reinstall, even though I am using 8 pro volume license?
There is no specific 'upgrade' 8.1 pro iso, so will an 8.1 pro (sans upgrade) iso work instead, with an option, when run, to upgrade?

Or is there another solution, perhaps? I may try the 8.1 iso myself to see if it offers an upgrade choice, I'll post back.

Let me know!

The ISO works, but it requires the 8.1 product key code (which we have). It rejects 8's previous code. Kinda round-about way of doing it. Do windows 8 VLSC licenses count towards 8.1, or do you have to purchase them separately?

found out that it requires the reinstallation of apps (despite that it said it would keep apps, etc). Don't think I'll use this method again.

Don't like the fact that it is so hard to get 8.1 upgrade for Volume licenses.

Here is my answer:
  • Windows 8 Pro, if installed by an organization or a program that uses Volume Licensing. Talk to your system admin, or the administrator of the program that was used to install Windows 8. If you’re the administrator, you can find more info and links to Windows 8.1 ISOs

The store does not have 8.1 available to 8 users of VLSC, yet MS requires 8 to be upgraded within 2 years.
