Windows 8.1 upgrade disaster

I'm using Windows 8.0 Pro with Media center 32 bit. Found the "update to windows 8.1 for free" app, and proceeded to upgrade. Took about an hour to download, and started the installation process automatically. A couple of re-boots later, and it went through various messages about what it was doing, and then.... presto. Now there were no questions about clean install or any other choices of what to set up, except after accepting the terms & conditions, there is express or manual choices for various things. I chose express.
When finished, I had a clean install. A desktop full of icons had turned to a desktop with about 4 icons! I opened the Control panel, and clicked "Programs", and was greeted by the message "There are no programs installed"!
I checked it out with File Explorer, and the Program Files folder was almost empty. Even Microsoft Office Suite has gone!
There was a new folder called "Windows_old version" which seemed to be full of my old programs, but there was no simple way of installing them from there.
So, It was a disaster for me, but the backup I did before starting got me back nicely to 8.0, and all working as it was yesterday!
It'll be a while before I try again.
