PC reboot time increased after Windows 8.1 update

Hi

My laptop reboot time has increased to a significant amount (about 15-20 secs, earlier it was < 5 secs) after I updated to Windows 8.1.

I am talking about the time it takes to lock screen to appear after I power on the laptop not the time from logging in to desktop visibility. Still I have reduced the number of start-up programs, and its of no use.

How can I reduce this time?

Regards
MH

After installing the upgrade, the waiting time at the boot menu reverts to 30 seconds. You can change this back to, say, 3 seconds through the Msconfig - Boot tab.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
Not helping...

When I switch on the laptop, the first screen is the HP loading screen which stays for 10 secs, then I see a blank black screen for 20secs.
Now when I get to the login screen, and when I enter the password, I see "Welcome" on the login screen for 20secs and only then am I redirected to the desktop/start menu which again takes 20secs to load the startup programs.

Before the 8.1 update, this whole process was over in 15-20secs.

Anyone can provide a solution to this problem?

I have 2 Surface Pros and an Inspiron 1764 Laptop
I have not updated my Desktop yet.

But I have not experienced this issue.

Keep in mind, that, your system could still be configuring in the background. possibly.
have you ran Windows Updates several times since you upgraded? There are updates out there.

No updates are available since the upgrade and I don't think that system is configuring in the bg... its been 2 days since upgrade and the update process is finished completely.

What startup programs do you have? that is sounding like a possibility. Perhaps you can turn some off.

I am having the same problem. Went through the services section disabling and enabling. Nothing is helping. What could be the reason.

Hi ice2hot,
Welcome to the forums, don't disable any services if you don't know what they do, you can disable "Start up" programs.

You know, not to get off subject here but I am failing to see the big deal, so it takes twenty seconds to boot 8.1 compared to the 5 seconds it took to boot 8. As for myself I am glad technology has come so far to get a pc to boot that fast. Boot times increase with any OS when you start adding programs, the registry starts getting cluttered, the adding or updating of drivers and so on. It could be any number of hundreds of things that could increase the boot time that one does not really have any control over.

Back in the Windows 95 / 98 / ME days you could boot your pc, go make a cup of coffee and take a whiz, and when you came back IF your pc was fully booted you were lucky, nowadays I boot my pc, get a cup of coffee and take a whiz and when I come back my pc has been waiting on me for probably five minutes, so you see the difference of five seconds compared to twenty seconds does not even rent the space in my head. It makes no difference to me, as long as the pc is ready to go when I am.

I too upgraded from 8 to 8.1, now I know for certain my boot time on 8 was never even close to 5 seconds on my desktop, even on a fresh install, but it was fast, after upgrading to 8.1 on a dual boot Windows 7 / Windows 8.1 system, from the time I choose which OS I am going to run when it asks to the lock screen is probably 15 to twenty seconds.

Its not about 30 secs or 5 sec but optimizing it. MS did that by providing users with a fast boot option. Speaking of which I believe this could be the cast.
Although the explanation might not be the best but here I go. Fast boot options acts like hibernating only that it shuts down the apps and the software which mimics a restart only that it save the other state in a file and then load its up in the memory allowing for a faster boot.

There is a high possibility that this could possibly be the reason for the slow boot that the OS is either not saving the file or the file that is being loaded into the memory is by some mean effected.

. Can a Software guru please look into in as I don't have the technical knowledge to explore this area.

When I upgraded, shortly after (not immediately I might add) my desktop started to take an extra 20-30 seconds to boot. Checking event log and some help from Google, I traced it down to my scanner. Amazingly, I went to the Canon website and they had updated drivers for Win 8.1 and it fixed the problem. It might be something connected to your system needs updated software to run. Just a thought m8, trying to help you.

You should give a fresh install of windows 8.1 , then it wouldn't be a problem
