One of my updates won't install.

Update For Windows 8.1 Preview For x64-based Systems (KB2863312)

This is not just a problem with that one update, but apparently when there's an error with Windows Update it also blocks everything from updating in the Windows Store, which also means I'll never see the 8.1 update until this is fixed. I've tried everything I can find but I still get the error.

One thing I tried was SFC /scannow in Command Prompt It did find a problem that it couldn't fix

I think this is the part of the CBS log that it's referrring to:

Try running the sfc /scannow again and if issues are found, follow immediately with this message to see if corrections are made:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Good luck.

I'll try again in that order, though the DISM commands were part of another thing I tried.

OK here's something new. There was an optional update from nVidia, which I had been ignoring since I get my nVida drivers straight from the source. But iI installed it anyway. Then I rebooted and tried the Win update again. No error message! BUT... I rebooted as it requested, opened Win Update and there was the update again sitting there waiting. Huh?? Under "Updates were installed" It lists the time from a few minutes ago and says "failed". So I installed it again. Same thing, it worked perfectly but after rebooting, there it was still sitting there.

Not sure what you mean here but I think I know what you are implying. You also failed to give us specifics about the one update that failed to install. You then follow up with a generalized sequence of events and that lacks specific detail as well. Please understand that I am trying to give you some constructive feedback so you can provide more specific details in any subsequent posts. Good luck and I hope you get your issue resolved.

Well by all clear in DOS I mean no errors like I posted above. I'm not sure what specifics you need. I posted which updated caused the problem and what error code it gave, then what I attempted to do to solve it and what error that gave. Not sure how much more specific I can get. I thought I did a pretty good job compared to the average user honestly.

if it helps, another couple of things I tried before what I posted here are from this page
Error Code 0x80073712 occurs in Windows Update or Microsoft Update

The Windows Update Troubleshooter, then the DISM tool.

Edit:
I forgot the Troubleshooter did show something that it didn't fix, which was why I moved on to other things.
