@topgundcp: I created a batch file as per your post and ran it. Unfortunately this did not resolve the problem.
@my2cents: The link you provided gives me the message "We're sorry, but your operating system is not supported by Microsoft Fix it at this time" (On my Windows 7 machine the link works and produces no error message)

I tried to install each one of the three problem updates individually but received the same error for each one.
I also downloaded a stand-alone version of one of the updates and ran it, but it bombed as well.
I posted a reply to the thread at KB2856373 update failing with error 80070026 - Microsoft Community in the hope that the poster there can provide a solution.
I am not sure it is very productive to keep bashing my head against the wall over this problem, in light of the fact that the update to Windows 8.1 will be pushed down via the Windows Update facility shortly. (Some articles suggest it might be as early as later this week) Heaven only knows what the world will look like after that update.

    Windows 8.1

Your version should be supported. Try browsing these search results and see if you can find a link that works:

However, if you intend to upgrade to Windows 8.1 this week via the Windows store, then why bother?

    Good luck

    Waiting for 8.1....

I have probably tried just about every kind of trouble shooter listed on Google.
I agree, I won't bother until after 8.1 comes down.
The fellow who suggested the problem was caused by a symbolic link, had no permanent solution either.

Sounds like the best course of action at this point! I think 8.1 will be available tomorrow. Good luck.

    Update to 8.1 fails

Tried downloading & installing the update to Windows 8.1. Received the message "This app wasn't installed - view details". Clicking on "view details" produces the following, very informative message apparently composed by someone not very fluent in English: "Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code 0x80070004"
Trying again just produces the same error again.

Any recommendations for an Apple or Linux machine?

i had issues similar to what you all are going through, did a reset, and tried to shutdown then all my updates installed. i'll admit the windows 8 update is the most buggy that i have ever seen. and im a veteran of windows been using windows for over 20 years.
