No Boot after updates, System Restore only option availabl

    Hi,

I have had to system restore 3 or 4 times in the last week or so as Windows 8 refuses to boot after installing the latest updates discovered from the last couple of weeks (though some are from December 2012)

I have unchecked all the current updates and have decided against installing them as they seem to be preventing Windows from booting.

Pattern - "Restart to install updates"
Restart locks on the start screen - Restart again and locks again (repeat this process 3x)

"Windows is automatically repairing..." - Fails
"Windows must restore settings to a previous time..." - Usually succeeds, sometimes fails.

Then I can get back into Windows.

As soon as I install these updates, I won't get back into Windows until I system restore since before the updates and my build won't remain stable unless I prevent Windows from installing these updates.

    What could be going on?

They are quite big updates (totalling ~740mb and have all been discovered in the last week or so though some date back to late last year)

I can give you a list of what they are if that helps?

You could run this batch file as Administrator:

    CLEANUP_UPDATES.bat

I have used it myself with no bad results.
It cleans the Windows Update cache.

I just now used it & cleaned out several cached updates.

It may or may not help your situation.
It won't hurt to try it.

If it doesn't help you could run sfc /scannow & then Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth & reboot & run sfc again.
Both need to be run in Administrator command prompt.
They can take up to an hour to run & finish.

If you decide to try these, post back with results.

The same happened to me with updates from the 30th. It hung on "Windows is updating your computer", I had to turn off PC. I had to restore back to system image eventually from recovery consol.

When I reapplied the updates after restoring it was OK though so I'm not sure of the cause. If you do restore you may as well try reapplying updates as it worked for me.

The procedure of deleting the cache using that tool and installing updates, restarting seems to have worked. Windows Update says that everything is up to date and my PC is running well.

To adamf: I actually tried reupdating and system restored 4/5 times and tried reupdating with no luck. This is why I asked for help on these forums.
