    Windows 8 pro key replacement

    I have a custom build pc, i bought a new windows 8 pro dvd (not upgrade), i used the key, and the from inside the windows i upgrade it and bought windows 8 media center. Now my brother need this pc and i have to build a custom new one. Remove the key from it and use it on my new pc is that possible. Or the key is stuck with my old pc?

    Hi,

    There are two ways to handle this, but they are close.

    1. Your brother replaces your key with his own
    Code:
    :: replace the old key with the new one
    cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
    :: activate
    cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs -ato
    2. You delete the key, which renders the system non-activated, and the rest is your brother's problem.
    Code:
    cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs -upk

    Many thanks, but i checked my dvd copy i bought it is written windows 8 pro 64 bit OEM, does you solution work for it or for retail Version only. Some saying that OEM ver. stuck with the first pc it is installed on even if it is custom made pc and can't be removed to another pc, is taht true?

    Technically, it should work. As for the legal aspect, read C:\Windows\System32\license.rtf

    If you've got OEM System builder with the Personal Use License, also refer to Personal Use License

    The OEM key under previous versions of Windows was locked to the PC. MS changed that in Windows 8 and for personal use you may transfer the OEM key to another PC that you own. If you transfer your PC and the OEM license to your brother then it becomes locked to that PC as he is not the builder.
