Hi,

is there a way to migrate an upgrade license?
i try to explain it better.

i bought a windows 8 pro upgrade license and activated on a windows 7 pc
now i would like to restore windows 7 and use windows 8 on another pc
is it possible to migrate in some way that upgrade license (maybe with a phone call activation)?

thanks, Roy.

Hello Roy,

According to what I have read in the license agreement, it is a retail license and it can be transferred to another computer. Here is the exact text from the license agreement for the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade:

What about upgrading the software? The software covered by this agreement is an upgrade to your
existing operating system software, so the upgrade replaces the original software that you are upgrading.
You do not retain any rights to the original software after you have upgraded and you may not continue
to use it or transfer it in any way. This agreement governs your rights to use the upgrade software and
replaces the agreement for the software from which you upgraded. After you complete your upgrade,
additional software will be required to playback or record certain types of media, including DVDs.

Can I transfer the software to another computer or user?
You may transfer the software to
another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to
a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new
user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media,
the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person,
without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the
media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to
share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media
Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer.

You can download a PDF version of the full Windows 8 Pro upgrade license here:

Thanks Justatest for pointing this out,
from this phrase above i understand that i have no more the windows 7
preinstalled license ( i do not know how it's called, it was a preinstalled system)
so if i migrate the os, the computer will remain with no license; this is what i
understand...

am i wrong?

You are not wrong.

The Windows 7 preinstalled software license is null and void after the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro.

So, did this answer your question and were you helped today? If so, please mark this thread as solved.

NO, you can delete the Windows 8 Pro install & go back to the original Windows 7 Pre-installed,
Using your OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD.

Ok, but can i use the upgrade windows 8 pro license key on another PC, somehow?
because i tried, after deleting win8pro install and going back to win7 preinstalled,
and it says the key is already in use...

thanks, Roy.

Did you ring MS?

I expect they will sort it out for you. You need to be very clear exactly what you are trying to do.
