Windows 8 pro fails 51 updates!

Hi,

if this is wrong please can some kind person move this to where it should be please..

I recently over this last week upgraded to windows 8 PRO from win 7 Ultimate....... all went fine until the pc tried to update windows... it has 51 critical or important updates to do and it will fail every time and then spendnearly an hour rolling back changes then doing it all over again...... wish never done it now!!

Can some kind person tell me why this is happening?

Upgraded my 64bit PC, I have attached my snippets of the details of the updates failures... I have followed every procedure I can think of, the only one left is to put the darned win8 disc back and see what happens!

The date and time in bios could be wrong. No error code?

I have no idea to be honest, never had a problem like this since using a pc - bring back windows 3.1 !!

Try to follow this guide for manual install of cumulative upgrades.

Also check if Windows Update service is not set to Disabled, it should be on Auto or Manual (trigger start). It is dependant on Remote Proceduere call (RPC) so check if that is enabled too. Some security programs are known to stop and disable it.

It is strange you seem to have succeeded in installing the update folks are having problems with right now (KB2821895), and the one it replaced.

You might check the following link and look near the bottom of the article and for the DISM options. That should help the situation.

Any questions about the commands, just post back. But the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth should help the situation.

again this morning failed updates and its ridiculous, never had this problem before

This is the view of my latest windows update requirements....... is it possible that only a couple may be stopping the updates installing?

Do I really need all of these for windows 8 PRO? Why would I need anything to do with a server or suchlike?

You just need to open an administrative command prompt, which you can do using Winkey+X and selecting Command Prompt (Admin) then typing in the command.

I do not know if the first one is really necessary since it does not seem to find anything, but type them and let them each finish. The first one scans your system for problems and the second one actually repairs the problems. It might take several minutes for each to finish. When the second one finishes, a reboot will be necessary.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup_Image /RestoreHealth

Let us know. If the updates are not automatically selected for install by Windows, it might be best to leave them unchecked until the next run.

You may have missed the space between DISM and /, try copy and paste the commands from this tutorial, Option one step 2, you could see the spaces in step 3.

can any wonderful person please advise any further on this update scandal........ still have this problem, still doing my head in, is there a microsoft phone number I can ring to discuss this ridiculous problem.

I have checked everything I can and still it will not install the updates it allegedly requires....

I am just utterly stumped as to why this is happening..... HELP PLEASE!!

You have just run into main reasons I do not do some of the things with windows, like not upgrading from one version to another and no automatic updates. I prefer clean install and waiting for service packs. Repairing large problems with windows usually ends up in disaster. There are just to many variables to consider with all kinds of systems that's just not possible to satisfy every one of them. There are so many of those "Patch Tuesdays" and other times when something "Important" comes up and most of those are not important for all and everyone.
If you still feel that you need all those updates, why you don't try to do them one by one or in smaller batches, there must be one that doesn't agree with your system or something in it, like maybe some AV, driver etc. As for calling MS for help with a problem like this I do not think they'd be able to tell you anything significant over the phone even if you are prepared to wait long time just to get to somebody to answer.

Fair comment...... will try your suggestion again and see what happens.....

The /ScanHealth switch never shows a problem. Use the /RestoreHealth switch and it should repair the install. Once this one update has been assimilated, things should go back to normal.

OK, here is the command. Copy it and then open an Administrative Command prompt and in that window, right click and select Paste. Then just run the command. There are spaces before the / on each switch.

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

That should repair your problem. According to your earlier attachments, you never actually got the command to run....

The attachment was run using Windows PowerShell on 8.1 so it might look a little different, but the result should be the same as an Admin command prompt window.

Right click "cmd" and click "Run as Administrator", then enter the command.
