Windows update service not starting Error 1067

Hello,

I am having a problem with my new Windows 8 ultrabook.

Windows update were not happening so i checked the windows update section of the control panel. It was set to 'Automatically install updates' but when i checked for updates i was getting an error.

I used the Windows update troubleshooter and it did some fixes and then when i checked the Windows update section it asked me to restart the system. I did the restart but nothing happened.

I checked the Windows update service and it was in stopped mode, when i tried to start the service it crashed. It keeps crashing whenever i try to start it.

I checked and BITS was in 'running' state.

I keep getting the below stack trace in event viewer:

Faulting application name: svchost.exe_wuauserv, version: 6.2.9200.16420, time stamp: 0x505a9a4e
Faulting module name: wuaueng.dll, version: 7.8.9200.16547, time stamp: 0x51301764

Could it be that any of the svchost.exe is in stopped mode.

Please help me i have tried several option online like resetting the windows update client, re-registering wuaueng.dll, etc!!

Please note that the service is not starting up, also some other services mostly those that are dependent on RPC service because of all this i am unable to download any app from windows store it gives and error code.

whenever i am starting the service i am getting the below error message in pop up:

"Error 1076: The process terminated unexpectedly"

Please help!!

Hi shawn,

Firstly thanks for replying and also for welcoming me :)

The first option you gave didn't work after restart the service was in stopped mode.

When i tried to start the service, it started for sometime and then again stopped -- this is what usually happens!

The second option gave me an error:

Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required t
o restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see
Configure a Windows Repair Source.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Please suggest what to do now?

Pranshu,

Usually when dism is unable to repair the component store, you may need to refresh or reset Windows 8. :(

sad :(

But are you sure that would be helpful...

I do not want to reset or refresh the windows.

couldn't we just give an alternate source and run DISM again

i did once windows restore but that didn't help either.

Is there any way to find out the root cause of the issue may then we will be able to resolve it.

The root cause is corruption from something. I'm not sure how to fix this type of corruption without a refresh or reset. :(
