Windows updater starts searching then freezes, with error: 4024800A.

Running Trouble Shooter shows it as fixed but it continues to recur.

Microsoft support engineer gives the following solution: Click here --> MSsupport It's the third post down.

Or to save time:

1. Open Start Menu --> Windows System --> Right click: Command Prompt and open as administrator.

2. Type or copy/paste each of the following commands; and press Enter after each one:

  • net stop bits
  • net stop wuauserv
  • rd /s /q %windir%\Softwaredistribution

3. Reboot. Takes a while to resort everything

You're welcome norepli. I had tried everything to no avail, and until I found the M$ support article I was quite worried, especially when Trouble shooter/repair says it's fixed and it's not. Where do you go from there?

Cheers M :D

Theres no need to restart the computer.

After you remove the directory "rd /s /q %windir%\Softwaredistribution" all you need to do is:
  • Net start wuauserv

However I would reccomend not using the following command set:

  • net stop wuauserv
  • ren %windir%\Softwaredistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
  • net start wuauserv
  • Check for updates
  • If updates are successful then: "rd /s /q %windir%\Softwaredistribution.old"

Your tip was very useful but during normal business hours restarting a production server is not an option.

Thanks!

Thats a little off topic for this thread but if you do not run your updates regularly the answer is, YES thats normal.
