Solved activation

Hi
I have been running Windows 8, with media pack, in 32 bit mode for the last two months without problems.

I have now done a clean install with formatted drive of windows 8 in 64 bit mode. All went well and activation was a success. However the USB network adapter is giving serious problems and a suitable driver appears not to be available. Briefly the whole system locked up and I did a reinstall, which was successful. Trying to find a suitable driver again caused problems so the USB adapter was taken out and a refresh done. The network was then cable connected, which is okay. However on trying to activate it now returns that the activation key is in use on another computer and I have to buy another key. It wont give me the option to activate by phone.

I understood you could reinstall as many times as needed on the same computer, or does changing from 32 bit to 64 bit override that. If so how come I have done the exact same thing on my laptop with no problems. Unless anyone can suggest an answer I guess it is a call to customer support. I would appreciate your views.

I think the 32 and 64 bit versions are two separate pieces of software with 2 separate serials. Are both versions on your disk?

Hi
The upgrade version comes with both 32 and 64 bit installation discs, and one serial key to install either version.

I cannot look for it right now, but there is information on the web on how to get by this problem by changing something in the registry. Do a Google search on "Activating Windows 8" and you will probably find it. If I have some time later on, and I find the registry solution, I will respond to the thread again. I just ran into a problem kind of like yours, but I was reinstalling Win8 Pro on another laptop after removing it from the one I originally installed it on. Microsoft still thought the original installation was still in place. In my case however, I was able to use the automated activation over the phone.

All sorted.

I downloaded the Belkin driver for Windows 7 and ran it in compatability mode for Windows 7. So far no problems.

I was on the phone to MS support in India for nearly two hours but in the end activation was achieved.

I suspect that the underlying problem was that I formatted the disc, with an external utility, and then did a custom clean install from the upgrade disc, but I don't know and support didn't say. The end result was that after close on two hours they re-enabled the key and activation was a success. The key for the Media Pack was lost forever and I had to use a spare key to reinstall.

I am now cautiously happy.
