Left my Surface Pro on while I had dinner. I came back expecting to put in my password to continue using it. It wouldn't accept any input but I noticed a note in light blue in the bottom right-hand corner that said as follows,

"Windows Update
Your PC will restart in 2 days to finish installing important updates."

Can you imagine that, I think their programmers need to get more sleep.

Hello gvlral,

That's Windows 8 version of the automatic restart to finish installing updates message. Windows 7 had the separate dialog pop-up to restart automatically in 10 minutes.

If you like, you can go ahead and restart the computer anytime before that to go ahead and let the updates finish installing. :)

Good one. :D

That is designed for people who never shut down the computer.
And since Win8 provides hybrid boot and you have it enabled, even if you "shut down" and remove the power cord for let's say 2 days, when you power it on and check the system up-time in Task Manager, it will say 2 days or more because the kernel state gets loaded from the disk's hybridboot file (swapfile.sys I guess) and continues from where it left after shutdown. This provides the faster boot times.
