    Update stuck... 12 hours now!

I was seeing some threads about this but it was not clear how to stop it. I have a new Lenovo laptop with Windows 8. Last night I was trying to uninstall something but it wouldn't let me.... said it was installing something else. So I went to restart my computer and then got the blue screen saying "Keep your PC plugged in until this is done. Installing updates 11 of 27..." After an hour I tried the ctrl-alt-delete to reboot but it would do nothing. Left it for another hour and tried a hard turn off (pushing my power button). I waited 1 minute and turned it back on... same blue screen with same message. So I left it over night and it's still saying the same thing!!!! The only thing I can think of now is to take the battery out.... but I don't want to crash my computer. PLEASE HELP!

How do I make sure this doesn't happen again?

    Thanks.

    Welcome to eightforums!

That is no error blue-screen. It is installing updates (on a blue colored screen) and that is normal behavior.

Are the updates going along? Did it went further than 11?
It would be best to let it finish because pressing the power button will only make the laptop go to sleep mode.

If it's not moving further with the update in a long time then you can remove the battery as a last option.
Then the first time you'll boot after this, will present you some options (it's possible) and then you can use system restore or refresh the pc if the updates messed something up during the process.

    Good luck

At this point it still says "11 out of 27..." After a few minutes my screen does go black.... I am assuming that's just a power savor and it's still updating? As soon as I move the mouse the blue screen comes back. Right now I don't need my PC, but it's frustrating I can't use it. Luckily I have an iPad.

There's something off with Windows Update, mine became stuck too but unstuck when I disconnected the internet, then said some failed, some succeeded. I wouldn't refresh unless you have to, I get a little tired of listening to that as a first option, especially to a known issue in Windows 8. I'm a little irritated it's included because people with no idea of what to do use it and realize it uninstalls a lot of programs. Now, restart it as it asks you to ( it should stop the stuck on so many updates once the net's disconnected). Now, whatever's off is something Microsoft should probably patch because it's happening in perfectly working order computers.

Now when you restart, before you start patching again go to Windows Update hangs when downloading or installing updates and run the update troubleshooter (under Windows 8 section). I have periodic trouble which it always fixes which makes it perfect to run straight before updates. Tell me if you run into any trouble. On one hand, it's a good thing that Refresh is available for use when the system is truly in trouble, it's something that's been needed. On the other hand, already where you'd normally see useful advice, the one-stop shop is 'do a refresh'. I wish they'd called it by a more accurate name that doesn't sound like refreshing the desktop to see changed files or reloading a net page. Reset is at least more straightforward.

How do I disconnect anything if I can't even turn the PC off... It's still updating. My husband is now taking the battery out... hope it still works.

You shut off the internet part, disconnect, I assume it was still connected up until now online and I really I hope this reply comes before you take out the battery.

Battery was taken out before receiving last msg... seemed to turn on as normal. I changed my Windows Update setting to "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." I hope I don't find any new problems caused by taking the battery out. It shows it still has 11 updates and I will do those later... One at a time.

Please run the step two, which is the going to the website listed and running the troubleshooter (Windows update diagnostic) before you do (it'll happen twice, I haven't found a way yet to automatically run it as an administrator) and it will let you install them all without the massive headache. When my computer did that ages ago, I would disconnect my internet and it unstuck the stuck updates if you will. Now its default issue is when it skips to preparing to install instead of downloading, I just stop it, run the troubleshooter I now have saved for easy access and voila, I can update without issue.
