    Automatically install updates without restarting

So, my laptop has a graphics card problem, so whenever I restart or turn it off, it takes about 100 times for the screen to turn on. Easy solution...don't turn my laptop. So during Winter Break, I turned off Automatic Updates to prevent it from restarting.

However, I'm now back on campus at my college, and in order for me to use the internet, I need Automatic Updates enabled. So is there some type of registry hack or ANYTHING so that I can do to have automatic updates enabled, yet not have it ever restart?

Hello Andrew, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If the Windows Update requires restarting the computer to finish applying, then you'll always need to. However, you could use the tutorial below to disable it from automatically restarting the computer.

    Hope this helps,

Thank you. I did the Group Policy Editor. My computer says it will restart in one day, but I'll update in 2 days to see whether it actually restarted.

    You're welcome.

If it says it will, then it most likely will though.

You might consider setting your Windows Update settings to "Never Check.....". This way you can install the updates when your ready, and restart the computer if required at that time.

Whether or not an individual update requires a reboot depends on what vulnerability the update/patch addresses and which file(s) is/are affected. Sometimes, no action is needed, but for others a reboot is required to complete the update. This is because critical system file(s) is/are involved, and these cannot be updated whilst the system is using them. So they are updated upon a reboot, before they have been loaded into RAM. With other updates, merely logging off and then on again is all that is required. However, I recommend rebooting as a matter of course after updating, as there are times when you will receive further updates but only after rebooting.
