This was happening to me , "failure configuring windows update, reverting changes, do not turn off your computer."
I had a lengthy case with MS Support via phone and Logmein , there must have been 20 phone calls over 2 months.
I had Windows 8 Media Center Edition. The in-place upgrade would not work with this version, so MS Support had to do a registry edit to change it back to Windows 8 Pro. Details below. I was able to perform the in-place upgrade with the installer and my updates were successful after that (all 34) I then added back Windows 8 Media Center as per instructions from my original email.
1) Run regedit.exe
2) Modify the following entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
3) Modify the following to:
a) "EditionID"="Professional"
b) "ProductName"="Windows 8 Pro"
c) "ProductId"="00178-11194-09674-AB777"
4) perform in-place upgrade using the Windows 8 PRO installer
5) activate the W8 PRO then upgrade again to WMC
