KB 2770816 - can't load drivers, do installs, etc

Hi all,

Well after finally getting win update working fully by refreshing my win8 on my new HP box, I did more windows updates yesterday. Since then, I've lost the ability to install new apps, control panel crashes from Programs & Features, Devices & Printers, and other various places. All web browsers randomly crash (I'm lucky this one has lasted long enough to type this), I can't print, and I've lost the HP software app that checks for updates and give status on my box.

HP tried to install 3 important updates right before I did the windows updates. They failed (I know one was a BIOS update). I haven't been able to get it to try running again. I've tried going through the HP support site, but can't install anything I download from there.

Unfortunately, the only error refs I have are generic dialogs telling me things failed. Other times, things simply vanish - eg, start a run & install fine and then the dialog closes and nothing else happens. Of the 14 windows updates I did install yesterday, the only system one was KB 2770816. All the others were Office-specific.

This is really insane. Help again? Anyone? Please? Pretty please?

Thanks so much.

Whoops! I just saw how to uninstall the update. However - are you ready? When I search the "installed updates" page under Program & Features, KB 2770816 doesn't show up EVEN though it's clearly listed as "Successful" "Installed" under Update History in win update. Aaarrgghhh.

BTW, Outlook has now started crashing too.

Found it - thanks so much! One last question, if you don't mind. I see where it says "show hidden updates" in win update, but don't see how to actually hide an update. Sorry for being such a newbie!

No problem, when you check for Updates you will be given available Updates, right click the selected Update and hide it.

Kb2770816

Hi Everyone who is having problems with installing update number KB2770816 especially those with a Medion computer. I had this problem since early August and contacted Microsoft recently. They have worked on my PC over the last two days and have now rectified the problem. They will be posting how to resolve this problem in due course on the Microsoft web site. The information on the community pages regarding the changing of Registry entries is incomplete. Until the correct information is available, I would recommend that you 'hide' this update to avoid the delays when restarting your PC etc after installing updates. I cannot praise the Microsoft technicians highly enough on how they have handled this problem for me and would recommend others to use his facility when things go wrong.
