Windows Update Issue: WARNING

    Hello brummyfan:
I had already tried disabling the Virus Protection on my machine, Kaspersky and it failed to install as described earlier.

I took your advice and removed the application completely and the result is the same. At reboot it indicates approx 9% installed as it's shutting down. On the boot into windows, it indicates the same approx 9% than drops off to the restarting indicator and reboot. Failure again registered in the windows updatel history.

Thank you for your contribution. Did your machine update without issue?

Hi Clarence, yes, the update was luckily smooth, check whether other 3 updates installed (see the snip).

I don't think I have the first three updates. The fourth one is the one that failed.

So, I just reverted my CPU overclock to stock settings and I got the ol' black screen of death again. After going through the same motions as before, I booted into safe mode and uninstalled my Nvidia drivers, as well and uninstalled the items under Display in device manager. I was finally able to boot back into my desktop. I went into device manager and noticed a "Logmein" display driver. I did install that program before. It's another remote desktop program that I uninstalled since I didn't really like it.

So, after having done all that, I tried installing that update again. Again, it failed in the same way, but this time I didn't get that annoying black screen. Not sure if this will help anyone else, but if it happens to other people, I hope it does.

Now, as for actually getting this update to install, I have no idea. No other updates are appearing in Windows Update. I suppose I could try installing those other files through MS's site, but I'd rather not.

I don't have any other antivirus installed.

Hi Chrono, I was also notified only of KB2779768 but after restart when I checked the Installed Updates I found out about the other three.
I would suggest to people to ignore these updates and hide them, MS will include these in their future updates, I guess.

EDIT: If you want to try download these updates and install manually, go to:Download: Update for Windows Server 2012 (KB2779768) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

It says they're for Server 2012. I know both 2012 and 8 are similar, but maybe this is the problem? An update for 2012 may not necessarily be good for 8, right?

Well, I just tried them. First, I tried the 4.2 MB file. Then the 1.6MB file. Both worked. It restarted for each one, applied the update, and it was successful. The 1.3MB file failed, but it was okay. It didn't restart or anything. Just said it failed. Good enough for me. Then I tried the 60MB filed and same deal. It restarted, started applying the update, got to 100%, then failed and had to revert.

I totally give up on this update. I hope installing those two didn't screw something up.

Same thing here Chrono. Two installed manually, but the two other failed.

    Correct as @ 24th December 2012

A solution that worked for me now on a Dell laptop was to individually install all the other updates and after that, the offending KB2779768 did not show as being required. I did reset the Windows update by deleting all the files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution in the safe mode as well just to be sure. To get to the safe mode, you can do this via a windows 8 boot disc or creating a separate Safe Mode Boot. How To Enable Windows 8 Safe Mode

    Hope this helps

    Regards

P.S. I did try a manual install first but that did not work.
