Got a 64 bit machine running Vista 32. Bought Windows 8. Tried to upgrade to the 64 bit version straight away but it wouldn't work - can't upgrade from a 32 bit OS to a 64 bit version. So, upgraded to 32 bit and registered my activation key no problem. have since done a clean install of the 64 bit version only to find that I've been an idiot and activated the wrong copy of Windows. Can anyone tell me who to contact to buy another key or to cancel the 32 bit version. Yours stupidly, themightybalzo.

Hello Balzo, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Your Windows 8 product key is good for both the 32-bit and 64-bit version. You just can only activate one at the same time of course.

Are you saying that you only have the 32-bit Windows 8 installation media, and need the 64-bit instead?

If so, then you could use the method in the tutorial below to download a 64-bit Windows 8 ISO that you can use to create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive with. The only catch is that you must do this in a 64-bit Windows to be able to download a 64-bit ISO. If you do it in a 32-bit Windows, you will only get a 32-bit ISO.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Sorry, just to make it clear, I've already installed 32 bit W8 over my original version of Vista 32. I then activated this THEN decided to clean install W8 64. My problem is that I've already used the software key for W8 32. I didn't know 'till too late that the key only works once for whatever version you activate first. I accept that this is just me being an idiot so I'd like to know if I can cancel the W8 32 key and re-use it for W8 64, or do I have to buy another key. It's a legitimately bought copy with receipts and everything but I'd rather have the 64 bit version because of the RAM limitations of 32 bit OS. Thanks for the replies.

PS The installation media is from a shop bought package with both a 32 bit DVD and a 64 bit one.

All you need to do is delete the x32 install, than do a clean install.

Have already disconnected the hard drive the x32 version was on so when I start up I've only got one version of windows running.
Vista and the W8 x32 upgrade were on drive C: but I've disconnected that and run a new install on what was drive D:. Don't understand how just deleting the old install or formatting the drive will clear that. Again though, thanks for any replies.

NO, you most delete the x32 install first.

Sorry, I am now becoming an official pain in the a"£$. Is there a recommended way to uninstall this version of W8 (PS this is the 32 bit version which activated ok) so that I am ok with EULA from MS, or is it as simple as reformatting this drive?

Balzo,

No problem. :)

Format or delete the 32-bit Windows 8 installation.

Since you said you already did a clean install with Windows 8 as in the first part of the tutorial below, do step 4 in the tutorial below to activate it.

Reformatted drive but windows activation wizard now tells me that the key is only for upgrading and not for a clean install...........aaaaaargh! Bloody PC World - "Yes this is complete software, not just upgrades." Back to square one I suppose. I really want the 64 bit version, does anyone know who I have to contact to get a full install key? Have to get it or it's back to Vista 32 with SP1 unless I go through all the tedious upgrade again. Hate being a noob!
