Are you sure it is the Pro version. Most vendors are shipping with Windows 8 Core and you have to pay extra for the Pro version.

you know, I am not really sure which version it is, and cant find where the version type is shown..
Also, I had purchased an upgrade for my other computer from MS directly, and they sent me a key for that as well, and neither of them work..
    thanks!

From the Desktop move over the Bottom Left corner and right click the Start Screen Icon and select System and it will show you the version.

Pressing the Windows key and the pause/break will also bring up the system screen for you.

it just says "windows", no "version" is listed..maybe that means "core"?

If it just says Windows 8 it is "core" and you can't use the free MC key. It would say Windows 8 Pro if you have the Pro version.

yeah, that's what I thought..no biggie, as this machine has hdmi in and out, so I can connect to a peripheral of any sort, and watch anything I want that way..
    thanks!

It is 'Windows Media Center'. You could order another free key but you have to use a different email address.

Windows 8 pro and Windows Media Center: Product Keys

    Hi All,

I applied for the "free key" for WMC. After a week or so I called MS and the guy there told me to re-apply. I explained that I had a Laptop and Desktop. He said just apply for one so I did and I received the email from MS with a key. I installed WMC and that was fine. Then I went to the laptop and there was the same email so I applied the key to the Laptop and now I have a warning that the product key has been used!. It is my fault, but this appears to mean if you install WMC it will replace that original product key that came with your copy of Windows 8 pro. If one has to reinstall Windows 8 pro at a later date what key would be needed for activation? The original or the WMC key? Perhaps both as required? I wish I had not bothered with WMC, but a freebee for MS..Well, say no more!

How easy is it to uninstall WMC from the computer?

I used Add Features to add free Windows Media Center. After reboot there is no indication of it anywhere. Nothing in Start menu or control panel. I use Ex7ForW8 to get a Win 7 style desktop and start menu. Is this a Metro/modern only app?

Or was I seeing things wherever I read that? Maybe that was only free for those purchasing the 8 upgrade from other OS's? I got my OS from my Technet Plus account. By the way, it works just fine.
If anyone has already gotten their Windows 8 Pro you can download Media Center for free until January 31 2013, must be activated before then also. Add features - Microsoft Windows
