Make Way for Windows 8

There is such a thing as release something ahead of it's time. Active desktop was an interesting idea, back in the day of slow internet connections it didn't work so well. Apple released the Newton a long time ago, again ahead of its time, and now there's an iPad.

Lastly, these authors should use Windows 8 for longer than a few mins before writing their articles and sounding like fools.

"Thus far, the live tiles are lame. One of them cycles through personal photos stored on the device. For many people, this could be embarrassing. And what's the point of a slideshow you did not request?"

Not embarassing if you turn off the live tile.

Microsoft can't do good, Apple can't do wrong...typical gibberish in search for clicks.

Ditto, RobR! Obviously another one that dislikes change for the better. I feel this author gets quite petty.

He never gave a reason as to why active desktop failed -> Slow infant dialup connections. Duh! It was way ahead of it's time. Now we download (and upload) with lightening speeds. As soon as my Start Screen appears it updates within a few seconds. And I mean a few seconds. Weather in four places, email live tile with three email accounts, and headlines of five news and sports apps live tiles. All there at a glance for me to look at. How innovative is that?!! I think this to be great progress.

I agree that they should not only use it, but also LEARN it. Obviously he didn't, otherwise he would have known that one can turn a live tile off or unpin it. Duh! One can personalize their Start Screen.

If anything, the live tiles replace gadgets. The unsecured, resource hog gadgets. And who says they won't develope live feed tiles? Some of these article writers must have a crystal ball somewhere. Geez!

Learn how to navigate on a PC with it. It's not bad at all.

I dislike negative people that live with a negative outlook on things. Get a life.

Seems like I have read so many negative as well as pro Win8 articles that I had to put another system together and go for a longer run of the OS and find out for myself.

So, after a good three to four weeks of everyday use and getting all the desired tweaks setup I am finding less and less to complain about. Seems a tad faster than 7 and very stable. I did finally settle on Start8 and with a couple tweaks to bypass the log-on I am getting to the desktop in mere seconds.

All of the software I needed for reviewing components works nicely as well as every application I have accumulated for the past year or so.

Wasn't sure I cared for the Windows Defender the way MS has set it up without accessibility for the "Scan With" in the indexing with the right click option. However, once again, the geeks among us have provided a tutorial to fix this minor annoyance.

Would I recommend running out or going on line and ordering this newest offering from MS, Nope, I wouldn't unless you just have to have the latest and grea----, no I wont say that, but I will say it is a solid performer once you get your personal kinks with it worked out.

Oh yea, Guy, stop causing trouble, you hear me. LOL

I will be using 7 a long time unless (9?) has some very compelling features to make me switch. Also, I'm not as skilled with windows as all you smart people ;) A Guy

Hi there
everybody is going round and round in circles on this.

Tiles are probably like older "Gadgets". Some like this type of stuff -- others hate it -- I don't really need to know the bus time table in Lima or the latest ramblings on the BBC over Jim. Savil's alleged or otherwise sexual proclivities and have the data constantly updated via live tiles. This sort of content if you need it is much better accessed on a Smartphone or even a tablet.

My real problem with the whole "Tile" concept is that there is no decent hierarchial system in which to organise applications that have other sub applications embedded in them.

You can make some sort of order after installing complex applications like say adobe CS5 suite or the full Visual studio applications but it's a lot of work and still isn't 100% satisfactory.

Tiles via Touch and scroll left are fine for a SMALL and I repeat SMALL number of applications on a touch device - but on a PC used as a computer - rather than just a device for surfing the internet, email, playing DVD's and logging on to those social media sites then the limitations of the Metro tile system are obvious.

If you don't have difficulty with the tile system --fine -- please enjoy as I'm sure it's 100% excellent for the way you use your computer --but there ARE others for whom this whole wretched interface isn't fit for purpose at all -- and I'm not just harping back like an old Dinosaur -- I've really tried to get this stuff to be USEABLE for the work I do -- and it's a losing battle.

I'll stay with W7 for these cases. -- If I've just got a FEW applications on a PC then W8 IS useable but the number of applications needs to be kept fairly small.

W7 can still be used for YEARS yet -- and even when it's stopped being available via retail you can run it in a VM. I'm still running and using a W2003 server (sort of XP like) every day in a Virtual machine for using legacy hardware and applications which didn't even exist as far back in VISTA.

Cheers
jimbo
