Minecraft creator tells Microsoft to 'stop trying to ruin the PC'

The creator of the popular game Minecraft, Markus Persson, took to Twitter on Thursday to slam Microsoft over Windows 8. Persson's critique is the latest to emerge from the gaming world, which is bad news for Microsoft, as the company seeks the support of software developers to ensure Windows 8's success. With less than one month to go until the operating system's release, the stakes are high.

"I'd rather have minecraft not run on win 8 at all than to play along," he continued in a follow-up tweet. "Maybe we can convince a few people not to switch to win 8 that way."

Example of a hypocrite right there. There is already Minecraft for Xbox and that is through an App certification process that is much more strict than that for W8. It won't matter for Windows 8 running on non RT hardware because those users can always run it on the desktop. If Windows RT tablets do well you'll see how fast he develops or ports over the Xbox version for them.

Not only that, Minecraft is available for mac os.

Now someone tell me, which platform is more locked down than the other....

Persson's views are irrelevant. Solitaire has more users than Minecraft. After all, it's a desktop game, it's a game! If his crew wants to stay relevant, he better get some programmers to write a Minecraft app.

Erm all he did was say no he wasn't going to certify Minecraft to run on Windows 8 as it would then encourage more sales of windows 8...

So all he did was tell Microsoft to use their own public displays rather then piggy back on the trend at the moment which is minecraft, and considering he has sold over 3 Million 'Unique' Codes, that is a large business oppurtunity for Microsoft.

Sheesh, why does people think that Windows 8 are ONLY FOR APPS and certifying is MANDATORY?

He doesn't have to do anything with it - just install it as a normal desktop application and be done with it.

What the hell is the problem with everyone and Windows 8?

Firstly, Welcome to EightForums!

And back to the subject, people don't think it is only for apps, MS wanted to showboat and say that Minecraft is compatible with Win8 which would then boost their sales as the minecraft community would think that Win8 would solve alot of bugs and performance issude, when they are just upgrading for Microsofts profit increase.

That is the only reason.

And what problem are you refering to? If you have a problem EightForums is right for you!

Anyway Have fun on her!

Disappointed, indifferent or outraged

I don't think Tolya understands why people despise/hate W8.

There are only a handful of "regulars" here who love W8.
Most of the other members seem to be disappointed, indifferent or outraged by it.

I think you will find that most of the people on here that like it are TechNet or MSDN subscribers who have seen the rise and fall of a couple OS's.

Personally I think that going forward windows 8 is going to unify the way that people use different devices for the same goals and make it easier to go from one office to another, especially if you take Students for Example, they can be shown how to do something on a tablet imbedded into a conference table and then go away and re create the steps on a standalone machine.

But I think I have pillaged this thread enough, I just wanted to explain the reason for Notch saying that he didn't want to certify windows.

Thing is, you can't either "love" or "hate" an OS. It goes into the dangerous territory of people "loving" their Macs. Which creeps me out.

I've been using W8 daily, for a number of things at work, since Developer Preview. It is a good OS. In some respects, better than 7. They finally fixed USB2.0 speeds (now Im getting constant max transfers), the LAN seems to be working WAY faster (network samba transfers are up from 5MB/s to 30-40MB/s at my company), moving some of the hibernation functionalities to shutdown does great things to startup speeds, there's native USB3.0 support...

There are things which annoy me though, like the obvious ergonomy design problems in the interface (even on my home 7 I use a customized Classic Shell).

Most bad things I am hearing from people about W8 is their little idiot preconceptions, like "every second MS OS is good", or "you can't use the W8 UI with a mouse" (yes, I did actually hear that). These people rant heavily about how bad W8 is, but their arguments show that they haven't spent five minutes actually using it. It even shows in some "journalist" texts, not to mention ol' Gabe and the hat minecraft guy.

Being irritated by specific features/design directions is good. I wholeheartedly agree with most informed critiques on the UI. But to be quite honest, working in QA on software development, I found out that most people don't even use the good old fashioned start menu in 7 (which in my own opinion is much inferior to the classic start menu in 95/98).

Problem is, for those few good arguments to be taken seriously by MS, we need to lose all the douchebags who jump on a W8 bashing bandwagon because it's the cool thing to do. Otherwise, MS will look at the critiques, write us off as a bunch of idiots and move on. Present them with levelheaded arguments and maybe they will take a look at it.

Sorry about a rant, had to get it out of my system I guess.

I agree that not making Minecraft (or other games for that matter), for Windows will surely be a slam on Microsoft. Gamers will resort to Linux or even OS X. I personally like Windows 8 overall, but when it comes down to gaming, If all of the games are for Linux, I'm sure I'll have Ubuntu installed as my primary boot, Windows 8 second on my boot list.

I think it's a bit funny how a game developer that made an 8 bit graphical game that is strangely very popular....also happens to criticize an OS that looks a tad blocky itself. :)

Even then, game developers that aren't on the Windows 8 bandwagon, their concerns boil down to Microsoft's potential of vast distribution of games through Xbox Live. See, the thing is, Xbox Live probably won't be hosting Metro 2033 or Sleeping Dogs or Mafia II or Dirt 3. Other game developers like Unity, are on the WinRT and Windows 8 bandwagon and have the potential to reap the rewards of that.

Excuse me, but what are you talking about? What is exactly stopping you from launching Minecraft on Windows 8? You don't have to do anything. Notch doesn't have to do anything. Turning games into APPS is not mandatory for compatibility. Windows 8 is Windows 7 with a different UI overlay.

Roughly 95% of all Windows 7 games work on W8. Those that don't work are due to issues, like problems with Direct Draw emulation (apparently), some strange read/write permissions quirk (which is already fixed on RTM) and some other minor compatibility issues (like it didn't happen on Vista/7) which will probably get ironed out, or not. There are LOTS of issues regarding UI shortcuts (because of obvious design faults in "metro"), but that isn't stopping you from launching the game - most people never used the start menu anyway and just clicked on the desktop.

See, that's what irritates me. The poster above clearly has no idea what he is talking about, but has already made up his mind about what is the quality of W8 gaming. Explain to me, why switching to OS X or some obscure linux distro should improve my gaming experience? Because wine/wineskin is a bloody mess to get working right - and most people aren't programmers.

It's not even like Minecraft is some sort of technical wonder. It's written in bloody Java, so OS support is pretty much guaranteed until the end of days (or until something better than Java becomes mainstream).

@SIW2: I would love to know who exactly and what their arguments are. Because with Notch and Gabe running around spouting nonsense without any backing in actual arguments, it's difficult to take it seriously. It is obvious that Newell is just scared that Windows Store might endanger Steam's profits (which is a legitimate concern, but wrapping that in pseudotechnical rants about how W8 will bring about the end of PC gaming is just dishonest).

Oh yeah, there were those Blizzard guys, but they jumped on Newell's bandwagon quite happily and I don't recall them saying anything vaguely important.

Apart from the usual whine that the UI is not suited for mouse/keyboard (not true) and Windows Store requirements, I've yet to hear anything substantial. And I would bloody love to, because I want to make up my mind basing on facts, not bottomless pit of uninformed whine.

Windows store a threat to Steams profits... you have drunk the coolaid. The only thing windows store is a threat to is itself.

Feel free to extoll the virtues of windows 8 but most are just not buying it. I still don't know a single person who stayed with it, actually most after reading about it just ignore it.

A: dude, calm down, it's not that big of a deal.

B: What I was saying was, IF by some small chance that a game company chooses to not make their games for Win 8, that I would resourt to usiing whatever OS they chose. I never said that I would not use Win 8 because I don't like the compatability.

EDIT: Please excuse, this was typed on a 3ds. I'll elaborate more if I need to.
