Month to go until Windows 8's launch, 2,000-plus Windows Store apps

A month from today, on October 25, Microsoft will launch Windows 8 in New York City.

With 30 days to go before Windows 8 and Windows RT become generally available, how are things looking from an app perspective?

As of yesterday, September 24, there were 2,188 Windows Store applications available internationally, with 1,593 of those available in the U.S., according to Directions on Microsoft Vice President of Research Wes Miller. There are approximately 150 apps that are available for x86/x64 machines and not ARM, Miller said. In other words, there are about 150 apps in the Windows Store currently that do not work on both x86/x64 (Windows 8) and ARM (Windows RT).

There are tons of great free apps one of which is from Stanford University which offers many free tutorials. Some of them have to do with computer science. One nice thing about installing the apps is that if you later decide that you no longer want them, you don't have to go to Control Panel to remove them. Simply right-click on the app which will give you two options: Unpin from Start or Remove. I for one will be looking at the apps.

Hi there
My PC is used for serious stuff.

If I need to know the time in Guantánamo Bay or what the inmates are getting for their dinner tomorrow then I'll use a smart phone. 99% of the apps on the store IMO are 100% rubbish and really look like they should be on smartphones - not proper PC's where people are doing useful work.

Most of these apps are really equivalent to the old VISTA "Gadgets" which I rarely - if ever used anyway.

Well jimbo--I'm not disagreeing with you that some of the apps may not be that great, but there are a lot of them out there--and there could be some very good ones. Some of the rest of us who also use there computer for serious stuff might like some of them.
I should add that comparing the apps with the VISTA "Gadgets" is a poor comparison.

I don't have a smartphone or a tablet or any touch device and have no plans to buy anything like that!
Windows 8 and some of the Store apps are very useful, informative and easy to use with a mouse and keyboard.

They are listed in the registry.
There are other locations also.

> desktop application > Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\
> metro apps > Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ActivatableClasses\Package\

If you have the (free) Reader app (Microsoft Reader)
Do a search > run > regedit > search > Microsoft.Reader > Find and Find Next (F3)

I can see that.
What came to my thought was that if those apps have as much entries as desktop apps, I presume that metro (Store apps) has its own way dealing with registry that isn't interfering with "program and Features" in control panel.

They do. If you go to the Programs File directory in the C drive, tick Hidden items, and the folder WindowsApps appears. You have to take ownership to even get into it, once you do...

They are designed not to show in the Desktop as I bet it has something to do with Win32 and WinRT coding differences and what reg entries are made or hidden to do so.
