Frankly, I'm OK with a Microsoft tablet computer

"Let's face it, Microsoft's Windows operating system is THE choice for business desktops. You have to admit it. The natural and logical next step is to produce a Windows-based tablet computer. I think the fact that now businesses have a total Microsoft option is good. Other companies have done this sort of thing for years."

Well, it's Microsoft's fault for waiting this long to get a real product out there for tablets. They are often late to the party and now that Apple practically owns the market, and Droid is catching everybody who doesn't want an Apple product, Microsoft is getting their Surface product out the door.

I think it will be quite hard to displace Apple at the present time. Functionality aside, an iPad is also a status symbol. Not to mention, you have more compatibility if you have the device that everybody else has.

Technically, Microsoft was working on touch computing back with Windows 3.1, again with xp, then further refined Windows to the point where it was a real contender in the tablet arena with 7. The main problem has been the fact that Windows acts and feels like it needs a desktop more than a touch screen and better optimized mobility and that's where Windows 8 comes in. In fact, Windows 7 had touch support before the iPad was released a bit later in 2009, I don't think they're really late.

I used to disregard tablets as little playthings, basically since apple had the chance to make a REAL OS, like making mac os more mobile but rather used ios. Windows 8 has really changed my thinking about tablets now. They can be ARM, Intel, or AMD based and can accomplish what I can do with a desktop but with a tablet. I really want a Surface Pro with a red touch cover!!

But I'll wait until pricing and details are released along with other OEM offerings...

My opinion is just that Microsoft was a bit late.. For the release of their New Tablet.. Apple caught up way faster than any other product in any Electronic Marketplace. Almost every individual owns an iPad for their own personal purposes. Microsoft should have released Surface a bit earlier.. But still, Surface will go higher.. Its not out yet.. Everyone will want to buy the new Surface with its latest Computing Technology, Metro UI Highly Enabled.. The Tablet is Attractive too.. They are in various colors, sensitive touch and much more new features are there in which, other Tabs do not have..

I find that the tablet PC is in its own category. It's not a phablet like the ipad or android. It's a Windows PC, and that's what makes it different, and of course, better. :)

Well, better is yet to be determined. Many of us aren't even sure Windows 8 is better. You know what people are going to think when they see the ipad next to surface in the store? They will think the Windows offering will BSOD and will have viruses and all other types of problems.

Yes, that's right.

I think it is MS best hope that they can get in there.

Tough to take on Apple at their own game in the pure consumer market.

Apple owns the consumer market as of now not the enterprise market and Windows 8 has more to offer at the enterprise level as a tablet device than the iPad.

Apple shares shot up $17 or so recently -wonder why that is.

They would rather have the ipad - because buying it makes them feel good about themselves.

That is the key.

Well, if you want to say, then really feeling good about yourself is making Windows run well and call it a day. No crowd following cliches. Note, I am not a fanboy of any of it. Just like computing in general. 7 is good. :)

And what you're saying about BSOD and viruses sound like a real bad mac commercial that apple would do. Seeing a Windows tablet PC, many people would be more intrigued by it. Why? Well, if people think Windows BSOD all the time and viruses are everywhere, why are PCs still being sold, bought, and used? If someone is in the market for a new PC, a tablet PC might be just the fit for some. It eliminates a laptop and ipad in one nice package.

No, I haven't used a windows tablet.

Judging from the fact you appear to be constantly on the verge of climax - it is probably pretty good.

If I ever want a tablet - I will have a look.

Is MS abandoning the desktop user - the kind who want to manage their files and create content - completely, or will they have something new for us at some stage?

If not, they might as well tell us now - so we can think about looking elsewhere.

We would like to support them - after all ,we have for years - but if they are not interested, we can't help them.

Yes, Windows tablets are very, very sparse, most people have never seen them. I have had the experience to use a few in my office. Far more people are used to touchscreens (at least in SmartPhones and tablets that are actually popular today).

But I can say that it is better. And what you're saying about BSOD and viruses sound like a real bad mac commercial that apple would do.
I'm glad you like it better. I don't and neither do many that I work with. If it works for you, great. You make it sound as if it's "a fact that it is better and not up for debate". I always say that I don't personally like it, it doesn't fit me, and I know lots of people who feel the same way. Mine is simply opinion on the matter.

As far as viruses and bluescreens go, you are living with your head stuck in the sand if you don't think that people have the impression that Windows is plagued with these problems.

Well, if people think Windows BSOD all the time and viruses are everywhere, why are PCs still being sold, bought, and used? If someone is in the market for a new PC, a tablet PC might be just the fit for some. It eliminates a laptop and ipad in one nice package.
PC's are bought and sold because of 1). cost 2). applications they use currently 3). familiarity 4). dislike of Apple.

There are quite a number of people who have purchased MacBooks and such because they have grown tired of Windows, and they are willing to pay a huge price premium to make the switch. I know quite a number of people personally who have decided to make the switch over to Apple. And being completely honest, many who have made that move, haven't been talking about how they cannot wait to move back.

Finally i think a surface tablet is going to struggle to replace ipad sales, because the surface tablet doesn't have the status symbol factor that the iPad has. I think many who purchase the tablet will be viewed as the 2nd class citizen who wanted an iPad, but simply couldn't afford it (that's if the surface is priced at 1/2 to 1/3 of an iPad). < And I think that is sad, but an accurate portrayal of what people will think.

As far as I am concerned people are more intelligent than what you seem to think! All people aren't as shallow as you seem to think either, not everything comes down to status symbols.

Please give 'PEOPLE' a bit more credit.

Could someone please remind me what a BSOD is?. I vaguely remember something about blue Screen message from the early days of XP but haven't seen one in so long not sure if we're talking about the same thing, or am I missing something? :p

The Blue Screen of Death (also known as BSoD or Blue Screen Error), known officially as a Stop Error or a bug check, is the error screen displayed by the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems upon encountering a critical error, of a non-recoverable nature, that causes the system to crash. The term is named after the color of the screen generated by the error. In Unix-based operating systems, a similar term is kernel panic.

Stop errors are hardware or driver related, causing the computer to stop responding in order to prevent damage to the hardware or data. In the later versions of Windows (Windows NT and later) the screen presents information for diagnostic purposes that was collected as the operating system performed a bug check.

Hope This Helps

I have to agree with you on this one.

My last BSOD was on 5 years ago on Vista but the fault was a wireless mouse...:)
Then I always installed the latest drivers, at the same time Windows was getting better and there were no more BSOD's to see.

I only miss the blue color of it, not the errors:
