Frankly, I'm OK with a Microsoft tablet computer

"Let's face it, Microsoft's Windows operating system is THE choice for business desktops. You have to admit it. The natural and logical next step is to produce a Windows-based tablet computer. I think the fact that now businesses have a total Microsoft option is good. Other companies have done this sort of thing for years."

Well, it's Microsoft's fault for waiting this long to get a real product out there for tablets. They are often late to the party and now that Apple practically owns the market, and Droid is catching everybody who doesn't want an Apple product, Microsoft is getting their Surface product out the door.

I think it will be quite hard to displace Apple at the present time. Functionality aside, an iPad is also a status symbol. Not to mention, you have more compatibility if you have the device that everybody else has.

Apple owns the consumer market as of now not the enterprise market and Windows 8 has more to offer at the enterprise level as a tablet device than the iPad.

Technically, Microsoft was working on touch computing back with Windows 3.1, again with xp, then further refined Windows to the point where it was a real contender in the tablet arena with 7. The main problem has been the fact that Windows acts and feels like it needs a desktop more than a touch screen and better optimized mobility and that's where Windows 8 comes in. In fact, Windows 7 had touch support before the iPad was released a bit later in 2009, I don't think they're really late.

I used to disregard tablets as little playthings, basically since apple had the chance to make a REAL OS, like making mac os more mobile but rather used ios. Windows 8 has really changed my thinking about tablets now. They can be ARM, Intel, or AMD based and can accomplish what I can do with a desktop but with a tablet. I really want a Surface Pro with a red touch cover!!

But I'll wait until pricing and details are released along with other OEM offerings...

My opinion is just that Microsoft was a bit late.. For the release of their New Tablet.. Apple caught up way faster than any other product in any Electronic Marketplace. Almost every individual owns an iPad for their own personal purposes. Microsoft should have released Surface a bit earlier.. But still, Surface will go higher.. Its not out yet.. Everyone will want to buy the new Surface with its latest Computing Technology, Metro UI Highly Enabled.. The Tablet is Attractive too.. They are in various colors, sensitive touch and much more new features are there in which, other Tabs do not have..

I find that the tablet PC is in its own category. It's not a phablet like the ipad or android. It's a Windows PC, and that's what makes it different, and of course, better.

Well, better is yet to be determined. Many of us aren't even sure Windows 8 is better. You know what people are going to think when they see the ipad next to surface in the store? They will think the Windows offering will BSOD and will have viruses and all other types of problems.

    Yes, that's right.

I think it is MS best hope that they can get in there.

Tough to take on Apple at their own game in the pure consumer market.

Apple shares shot up $17 or so recently -wonder why that is.

They would rather have the ipad - because buying it makes them feel good about themselves.

    That is the key.
