Don't price Surface at $199, pleads Acer

Microsoft may consider maintaining a price gap for its Surface products to give hardware partners some competitive breathing room, according to an Asia-based report.

Acer chairman JT Wang commented publicly on Thursday that Microsoft is seeking ways to create a price chasm between its Surface tablet and competing products from PC makers, according to a Friday report in Taipei-based Digitimes.

"Microsoft is currently looking for solutions such as creating a price gap to minimize the negative impact on other vendors' product lineups," according to the report.

Acer needs to spend more energy coming up with a tablet that will compete with the Surface rather than continue whining about it. You don't read about other OEMs complaining.

That would be thoroughly impossible to do that as Microsoft would be losing money over it.

Lot of electronics are sold initially without making money. The Xbox, Xbox360 and PS3 all sound for losses.

Not if they make it back up in the APP store? Ever wonder why printers are relatively cheap but the ink is expensive? You can't use one without the other. The Surface RT is going to be the bait.

If MS sells it at that price I will definitely nibble.

I wouldn't buy a Surface at that price. You get what you pay for!

Wouldn't be ironic if someone figured out a way to put Android on an RT.

You probably saw that story a while back. The author's guess at what the eventual pricing may be seems like a good stab. I am curious if many people think Surfi will sell in decent numbers at $600 or $1000. Oem's will be slotting in wherever they can - below that mainly, I would think. ...
