Exclusive: Microsoft's Windows 8 packaging revealed

Microsoft announced the finalization of its Windows 8 operating system last week with some gloriously crazy Start Screen improvements. The final copy may have leaked online already, but if you're waiting to secure an official boxed copy on October 26th then we're able to offer a sneak peek at how Microsoft plans to sell Windows 8. Packaging for Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro, the only boxed versions available in retail stores, is a fairly simple affair. Microsoft has chosen to display its Metro style Windows 8 style UI logo prominently on the front of the packaging, with a darker variant for the Windows 8 Pro edition.

Does anybody know if MS is going to proceed with a retail copy of this product, which would actually sit inside of this box and be available on store shelves. Otherwise, I'm unsure how many people would ever actually see this.

I hope that they legalize system builder licenses. They are dirt cheap compared to retail.

I believe they have already said that the "systems builder" licenses would be usable now by end-users and home hobbyists. However, no price has been mentioned as to what this price will be. And I'm also wondering whether or not it will be like OEM and suitable for only the computer it was installed or activated on and if I build a new PC then I must simply buy another "System Builder" license for the new PC.

MS has said that the Upgrade version would be available for $69 at the retail stores during the online promotion. No information on the System Builder version yet.

Are MS going to bring out "Adult packaging" too, like the publishers did for the later Harry Potter Books?

Why would they do that? They got rid of the Adult Interface in the software... Windows 8 is like Windows for Toddlers...

Before I tested out the leaked RTM builds and saw the packing, I did not get it but I thought it looked eye catching. After now, I get it. The different weird mosh of patterns and images are based of the new Start Screen patterns.
