Is Windows 8 Really a ‘Catastrophe’ for Content Creators?

Valve Software bigwig Gabe Newell has his long knives out and he’s slashing in Windows 8′s direction, going so far as to call Microsoft’s imminent operating system makeover a “catastrophe.”

It’s not the first time for Newell, who allegedly took umbrage with Windows 8 while visiting with Linux community buff Michael Larabel, who wrote “[Newell's] level of Linux interest and commitment was incredible while his negativity for Windows 8 and the future of Microsoft was stunning.”

I think that Windows 8 is kind of a catastrophe for everybody in the PC space. I think that we’re going to lose some of the top-tier PC [original equipment manufacturers]. They’ll exit the market. I think margins are going to be destroyed for a bunch of people. If that’s true, it’s going to be a good idea to have alternatives to hedge against that eventuality.

I read that, but there's no detail behind to allow me to understand how it would be a problem for PC manufacturers, especially the "top-tier" ones. (I suppose that if they basically sold only Windows 8 PCs, and the OS was so hated that no one would buy them, it would be a catastrophe.)

Perhaps Newell/Valve don't like the Windows 8 Apps store, which may have negative effects on Steam. (I hope that if it kills Steam, that it doesn't have similar annoying features, like requiring an Internet connection to play a game on a local PC.)

I think he is crying about the Metro App Store, where MS has to approve your Apps and take a fee to sell them through MS App Store. Same thing Apple does. This does not affect normal desktop programs, so whats his problem. Let him port all his crappy games to Linux and see how that works out.

I've read other articles where the authors suggest that the cost of the extra HW will slash the profit margins on computer equipment.

Remember it was only a few months ago that HP (#1 PC maker) tried to drop their PC division, because they claimed it wasn't making enough money.

How many different products does Apple make?
They probably only make about a dozen models/products in total.
Apple's entire range is probably smaller than most PC manufacturer's laptop ranges.

IMO the PC manufacturers problem is actually caused by having too many models.
With W8, they now have to produce an extra product line (tablets) which will only make the situation worse.

I think PC makers need to streamline their PC offerings, I don't get why there are about on average a dozen or more different models in one SERIES of laptops or desktops or whatevertops. They're all the same other than what the guts are. I don't get it. It would be easier to cut it down to a few models and within the model series, have different hardware configs.

But anyways, no, I don't think Windows 8 is a stab to content creators. I find that it's whining about the Windows Store. If I were Valve and Steam, I'd embrace the change as they could potentially expose their companies further with the Windows Store with a metro styled app and still have game offerings as I doubt the Xbox Live branch of Microsoft will invest heavily in those types of games.
