Microsoft sets lowest price for paid apps at $1.49 for Windows 8 Store

Valve may not like it, but the Windows 8 Store is coming, and more details have emerged about pricing policies from Microsoft. The most notable: the lowest-priced paid apps will start at $1.49 instead of the 99 cents that consumers may be used to from shopping for phone or tablet apps in iOS and Android stores.

Prices can rise in 50-cent increments all the way up to $999.99. Developers can choose to release free apps, and support them with in-app purchases. Unlike other app stores, the Windows 8 will allow seven-day trial periods for users to test paid apps before purchasing them. According to an MSDN blog post, apps using trial periods that are sold in the Windows Phone store have earned as much as five times as much as apps that don't.

Thanks, Brink. More proof in support of my thinking as to which way M$ is headed in computing. M$/Metro interface apps that will replace software as we have known in the past. Eventually bye-bye desktop to meet up with it's friends Spinner and Paddlefoot.

    2-a-roo for now..................

    Hi there
actually the whole "Paid for App" concept IMO has passed its sell by date.

I have a Galaxy IIIs smartphone -- and the ONLY app I've ever purchased was a small upgrade to Winamp for Android so I could play music by FOLDERS and FLAC directly just like on a PC -- and that only cost me around 3 USD. Everything else I use I found 100% FREE stuff which is just as good or even better than the "Paid for" stuff.

As I've also set the language on my phone to ICELANDIC (Well done Samsung --First time I've seen this Language option on a phone) I totally don't even notice any small adverts that might appear with free apps I don't even see any nagware either urging me to "Go Pro for xx.xx" -- with the language interface you don't even notice them !!.

Trying to set up a Google or ITunes type of operation won't really cut it for Ms.

BTW as you can run Android ICS as a VM you could probably get any of these apps from their android version and never buy anything from Ms at all.

I don't really see the "App" store as a successful business model -- I mean these days who actually BUYS SOFTWARE from Ms in any case -- even products like Office can be sourced from different providers and can be differently discounted too.

The EU won't allow Ms to monopolize software distribution by restricting it to the app store in any case. Whether this is allowed elsewhere is a moot point too as I'm sure the USA has decent anti monopoly laws too.

    Cheers

If a person has apps from the Microsoft store, do they have to be repurchased if you reinstall Windows 8 or are they like Apple's App Store where there is no cost to reinstall?
