Problem with April 11 updates.

Is this the only update for April 11th? Whatever update automatically installed today messed up my laptop big time. The message was updating 0% and it hung. I tried system restore and it failed. Refresh your computer failed. The automatic repair after the computer didn't boot twice failed. The repair startup didn't work. I can't get it to boot in any safe mode which you can get to from advanced option when your automatic repair fails. I did get to command prompt and it is X:/Windows/system32. How do I get it back to C drive or to what I need to boot properly. My installation discs don't have a repair option. I don't want to do a factory recovery except as a very very last resort. I have two weeks files not backed up and programs that I can't replace like Microsoft Works. It took my entire day minus running an errand working on this and I'm sick and tired of HP computers and completely disgusted with this situation.
Update; I tried typing "cd c:" right after system32>, with no space, to change directory to C after continuing to search for answers on the internet and it won't change directory. Did I enter the command incorrectly?

Yes you entered it incorrectly.

One Basic DOS command ... drive letter + colon = change to the drive. So for example D: switches to the drive D.

cd is short for change directory. So with for example cd windows\system32 you change to that directory.

You could try to copy your files to another place and use your backup.
