Storage in 2017: Big improvements are on the way

If 2016 wasn't tumultuous enough for you - the world's largest storage company sold itself to Dell - you ain't seen nothin' yet. The pace of change in the storage industry is accelerating - and that's good for us.

The pace of storage change continues to accelerate, and its impact on us continues to grow. Digital storage is central to a digital civilization, and as we grow more digital, we grow more dependent on improvements in storage. Here's what to expect in 2017...

For the last 15 years (Ok maybe not a full 15, I was using IDE drives at the same time) I've been using sata hard drives, MBR hard drives. When working with 160 GB/320 GB/500 GB/1 TB drives, you develop certain skills with dealing with those and habits when you do replacements or repairs.

My friend brought me over a failing 2 TB hard drive and a 3 TB replacement

Both of these were by the way formatted as MBR not GPT like they were supposed to be.

So I connect the 2 TB drive and it detects as 1.5 TB, and the blank 3 TB drive detects as 750 GB!

The problem was his original failing drive being MBR, I had to format the 3 TB drive as MBR as well which turned that effectively into a 2 TB drive. A whole 750 GB were wasted.

Ha! Well in the end I recovered his original files and operating system and that's the way that he wanted it. His system didn't even have UEFI so I couldn't really format GPT. Come to think about it none of my home systems have UEFI either. But if you want large hard drives that's the direction you have to go.
