Should firms wait for Windows 8 before getting a new PC?

You may already have heard of it by now: Microsoft has finally confirmed the hotly-anticipated Windows 8 operating system (OS) will be released in October this year. To be clear, Microsoft's flagship OS is scheduled for release to manufacturing (RTM) next month, with general availability expected in the latter part of October.

With a whole slew of laptops and desktops running on Windows 8 arriving in barely three months, should businesses hold back on buying of new desktop and laptop PCs? The answer really depends on your needs.

Let's start off by evaluating the two key considerations: ability to upgrade to Windows 8, and what you stand to lose if you buy a PC before the release of Windows 8.

I see it so tempting to having less price for upgrade. Today I'm about to give an approval for a purchase order of 30 locally assembled desktop PC as workstations for the incoming web based hospital IT system along with Windows 7. Windows 7 also listed in the paper, priced at $70 each. Since those 30 machines are new so the IT team and I haven't consider upgrading yet.

I play around with all Windows 8 releases, but actually never dare enough discussing it in any company meeting unless the stable release are available. The board noticed if I do use Windows 8 in a lot of presentations but I just said it is just trying out.

Yes. At present Windows 8 is like any new Win OS version, hence jumping in before the first SP is not a good idea for businesses regardless of their size. Also, at the present time 8 has a learning cure that could challenge any business. Hell look at those out there that are experts on all (so "they" say) things Windows who have yet to figure out how to use the new Start Menu.

Not picking on anyone. . .or, maybe.

I've used Windows 8 To Go for some presentations in PowerPoint 2010, I get a some "whoas" in audience...
One time, there was this guy in the audience and I was showing him my Windows Phone and when I plugged the laptop running the To Go drive, it was on the Start Screen and displayed onto the projector. He was like, "Whoa, how did you get it to look like your phone?!" Technology!

We're still not on Windows 7 everywhere - Windows 8 is a long, long way down the road, and certainly not in the picture at this point. I'd say 99% of the PCs in the company run XP. Windows 7 is being planned but it'll be at least a year before we get everyone onto that platform.

For a small IT-based business maybe it's worth thinking about, but don't look for mass adoption of Win8 in the business world anytime soon.

If I was a CEO or a manager I wouldn't touch the PCs that are being used right now. I'd keep my staff on Windows 7 computers for at least another year. Only because most programs may not work right away like AutoCad or any other major program that is used in businesses.
