Windows 8 to arrive by late October, Microsoft says

Finally: Microsoft has pinned some real availability dates on Windows 8.

Tami Reller, corporate vice president of Windows, told partners attending Microsoft's worldwide partner conference in Toronto this morning that Windows 8 is on track to be released to manufacturing the first week of August, and to be generally available by late October 2012.

    That is a bit unfortunate.

Is it a good idea to coincide with Apple's next big thing?

Ehhh, last time when Windows 7 was released, the OEMs were ticked a bit at Microsoft for having missed the back-to-school shopping season window. September would be more logical since it's the peak of back-to-school shopping and it's just a mere month after the RTM.

    Thanks, Brink.

Reller also announced at the partner show that Microsoft has sold 630 million Windows 7 licenses to date, up from 600 million at the beginning of June.
That's about 30 mil copies of 7 in about one month's time. Although I don't know past OS sales history, one would think it would slow down before another OS release coming up. Like the Fudd would say "Theyew's something going fishy awound herew!"

    Imagine you are Tim.

Finding it hard to maintain Apple growth rate.

MS will do their biggest launch ever just before the holiday buying season.

    What would you do?
