Is it a good idea to coincide with Apple's next big thing?

Ehhh, last time when Windows 7 was released, the OEMs were ticked a bit at Microsoft for having missed the back-to-school shopping season window. September would be more logical since it's the peak of back-to-school shopping and it's just a mere month after the RTM.

Thanks, Brink.

Reller also announced at the partner show that Microsoft has sold 630 million Windows 7 licenses to date, up from 600 million at the beginning of June.

That's about 30 mil copies of 7 in about one month's time. Although I don't know past OS sales history, one would think it would slow down before another OS release coming up. Like the Fudd would say "Theyew's something going fishy awound herew!"

Imagine you are Tim.

Finding it hard to maintain Apple growth rate.

MS will do their biggest launch ever just before the holiday buying season.

What would you do?

Launch a new 10 in tablet that is slightly thinner than the "new iPad"? (They are) I wonder what they are going to call it though...

To the extent I accept the growth rate premise which has not happened yet, gee, I dunno. 7" iPad? New iMacs? The iPhone 5 and iPod refresh? An Apple television?

LOL.

I don't know what he is going to do.

7in ipad might just be a rumour - maybe they will concentrate on their phone , but there is a big market there. Windows isn't in it.

The "thinner iPad" rumor is the only one I've seen so far with any smell of reality to it. I'd bet on that, but not much else. There COULD be more, OS updates etc, but everything else is just wishful thinking so far it looks like.

I don't think these things will come out all at once. Apple fanboy heads would be exploding like the aliens in "Mars Attacks!"

I do feel pretty sure Microsoft tablets won't be hot holiday items.

Good one, legacy7955! Very creative and humorous sarcasm!

When I was a boy and watched the movie I didn't much think about it. By the time I was a teenager and working for the man? I woulda' shot the miserable old crank and found another Fn job! :p

All kidding aside...Reading the post through, it is getting to be a matter of market timing. School or Christmas market? Definitely too late for the Surface and 8 for school. Christmas for sure. I dunno what Apple has up there sleeve, but I'll bet it's some iMe iPad. That's the hot market.

Who knows? Maybe with the world economy as it stands, both may not do well.

It's the 30 mil copies of 7 that M$ sold the last 5 weeks that baffles me. Why would anyone want to buy 7 when 8 is launching soon. One would think they would at least wait to see what it's like. Then buy 7 if they don't like it. I don't get it. There can't be that much ignorance out there. Could there? Perhaps they already checked out 8 and don't like it, so they're eating up 7 before it's too late. But, that doesn't jive with the touch pad market.

I think it's incredibly probable that the new, unproven, uncool thing nobody wants is going to flop miserably at Christmas. I think most people would be appalled to unwrap a Microsoft Surface Christmas morning, and I doubt many people will be foolish enough to purchase the things for that purpose. Introducing the thing in October seems like just another big serving of fail from Ballmer and Co. They miss out on back-to-school, and if anything, by introducing so close to Christmas, they stand to highlight how little the market wants their product.

Who knows? Maybe with the world economy as it stands, both may not do well.

That's the ongoing fear, certainly.
