Gen Y: The insecure generation?

Heh that's just good old fashioned getting smarter(more experienced) as you get older. The longer you live the more you whitness or experience the consequences of being insecure and your mental ranking of it's importance goes up. That curve will probably stay the same forever...

Yes. Getting older and wiser through experience. The older we get, the more one has to loose also. Surprising though that many keep sensitive files on the C drive and/or other internal drives (I'm assuming) and do not use a firewall?!! That's basic stuff. I use a external drive to store/backup that of which I can turn on and off, usually off and most definitely a firewall.

Thanks for sharing the article Golden, although it doesn't have a lot to do with Windows 8.

From what I've seen, this is true. Younger generations don't do CRAP with security versus the aged, more experienced user. I guess the only way to gain experience is when you have to reinstall Windows due to a lack of anti-virus! :p

I also want to through out there, from what I've seen and encountered, younger generations only know HOW to use technology but have an extreme lack of genuine "tech-savvy" skills to troubleshoot and/or repair the technology that they use everyday. I bet some of Gen Y's "tech-savvy" comes from them being able to touch a button to reset their phones....

But there are those young kids that are genuinely impressive and ACTUALLY know how to fix technology.

That has also been my experience.

I'm amazed at the number who have problems, then I find that they have no security whatsoever....

Yes, Coke Robot, I've struck that, too.

The best one was a bloke whose machine had crashed (back in the Win 95 days)
because he had NO directory structure at all, and had just kept installing things
into the root directory until it choked and fell over.

He was a beginner, and no-one had told him any different.....

The results aren't that surprising really.

gen Y - particularly the younger ones on the scope have by and large grown up not really knowing much different. Online has always been there for them. So too has 'convenience'. Security gets in the way

Non gen Y, or those that remember a life before the internet, are bound to approach security differently. An element of inherent mistrust helps there. As already mentioned, age/maturity/wisdom also plays a big part. Noticing ramifications actually exist is just a part of growth.

But as already mentioned, Gen Y doesn't automatically classify them as 'Tech savvy'. Some truly are while others are simply dumb. It's not really a generational thing, that's just normal :)

I'm non-gen Y and consider myself to be 'tech-savvy' (hate the term though ;) ) - but I'm still pretty 'slack' when it comes to security. I'm Secure - but could be better. I like my convenience, but at least I acknowledge my slackness :D

All that aside however, it's still a disturbing trend.

The thread is approaching a day old. It seems to me us older ones have posted here, except Vladimir, whom I believe is the youngest and would consider to be in the Gen Y. (All, please correct me if I'm wrong, for I'm only a month into the forum and presently getting to know members)

That being said, I have to ask myself why the younger aren't posting? Is it that the subject matter is not interesting to them? Which would fortify the subject of the article. Just wondering....
