Bill Gates Explains Why Microsoft Had To Punch Its PC Partners...

A kind of business man that always close and direct to his mind set.

Even there's a lot of competition around he still manage to over come the situation and take chances for the future ahead.

Yes it is true that for over 20 years of MS in the business they have achieved as OS but in the other hand today is different from the past few decades.

MS and W8 OS, if you have achieve the 2 leading products (OS & tablet) that are to be release in the coming months you have conquer the economy and the market.

I watched the Charlie Rose bit a few nights ago and the interview was rather interesting but the part about the Surface and Windows and Microsoft, definitely interesting! That's when it dawned on me that they're furthering their business model to where it kind sounds more like Windows 8, no compromise, best of both worlds. A company can have some verticality to it while being horizontal, a true paradox.

There you have it.

They are happy to kill the pc.

Pretty obvious why.

Skydrive storage alone will be a nice earner for them.

Not so nice for the users.

I suppose there will be a desktop market for enthusiasts for a while - lappies/netbooks will be the first victims.

How long will it be before it is uneconomic to manufacture even desktops - and software for them.

How the freaking hell is one supposed to do real work on a computer any more?!?!?

Photoshop? Illustrator? Computer artwork? CAD? Music production? Animation? And pretty much anything more technical than dragging pictures around with a touchscreen?

Do we ALL have to move to OSX? (Even though they are also playskooling that OS as well).

It is absolutely delusional to think that you can just abandon that entire sector without consequences. When people don't need windows PCs any more (or can't get them and all switch to Apple or Linux (if that ever gets off the ground)). THEN why would anyone want to use a Windows tablet or phone over an Apple or Linux offering?!?

Well stated, People. I believe M$ will come to their senses, unless they already have, to offer an Ultimate and/or Enterprise version with choice of UI with desktop start menu if one chooses to go that route. They would have to be absolutely insane not to!! After all, it is named Windows 8 and not Metro 8 just like following OSs like XP or Vista were named. That's what I be thinkin'.

I could see us seriously heading for another user/buisness split ala NT/95 :/

I think it's a really bad idea as it will fragment the application market (Well metro will already do that, it's almost like having two different OSes!)

But frankly... it seems like a serious potential outcome of all this. Windows 9 could be "home" metro only, "Pro", desktop only. The home version would be like the RT version, completely removing the entire desktop and all support for desktop apps. Then hopefully the pro version would be you know.. Windows 7 :D (Well with hardware improvements etc as forward progress in that area dictates)

C'mon guys

Ms is NOT the evil empire

also Bill Gates via his foundation has given FAR MORE to this planet than 99% of "Failed Bailed out Banks" that almost every govt has bailed out for some reason or another whatever their electorates have said.

I can't understand why there is so much animosity against BILL GATES -- just look at his bio on google.

Steve Jobs that everybody seems to idolize never gave ONE CENT to any charity -- and his personal habits didn't endear him to his co-workers either.

I've worked in the USA and never had a problem finding places to have a shower --but Steve jobs and Water were apparently an "immixible" combination."

Where was the animosity against Gates? I agree with everything else you said... But anyone that thinks there is no longer a use for the desktop is by definition "Delusional". If BG falls into that category then... :/

Not sure exactly why he even chimed in on the subject really... Ballmer must have begged him to or something.

This is true, steve jobs was the like the Second Coming and lead a cult following and was revered as a great person even though he was a spaghetti. The thing against Bill Gates is that he worked a capitalist system and made himself one of the wealthiest people alive, BUT, he uses that money for philanthropic work. He plans on leaving I think ALL his money to charity when he dies and has helped to make great progress in third world countries to prevent disease and malnutrition and that's his only focus these days.

I think some need to realize that the Surface itself has a mouse input through its touchpad. The mouse isn't going to be abolished in two years. Touch is something that will take time to perfect, as the GUI needed time to perfect with mouse usage.

Delusional is right, Windows 8 isn't even made for a PC, it's for a mobile platform period, so in my book it doesn't even compete with a PC or Windows 7 and it's not about to replace either anytime soon.

Looking at the attendance at this forum I'd say that he's more than delusional, he's completely insane.

The strange thing is that I've seen a bunch of Microsoft ads pushing Windows 7 lately, saying how great Windows 7 is on your PC, like it's something new all over again.

It looks like someone in the advertising department is taking steps to save the company before it goes completely under.

OK. I did. To quote Wikipedia - Here's a portion:

Gates stepped down as chief executive officer of Microsoft in January 2000. He remained as chairman and created the position of chief software architect. In June 2006, Gates announced that he would be transitioning from full-time work at Microsoft to part-time work, and full-time work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He gradually transferred his duties to Ray Ozzie, chief software architect, and Craig Mundie, chief research and strategy officer. Gates' last full-time day at Microsoft was June 27, 2008. He remains at Microsoft as non-executive chairman.
So who is to blame for Metro if one wants to lay blame? Ray and Graig? Ballmer?

Not bad for a college dropout. BTW: I believe Linda Gates was the one that started the Gates Foundation and Bill, like a good husband, he went along. But none the less it is his, ah hum, their moola.

Steve Jobs that everybody seems to idolize never gave ONE CENT to any charity -- and his personal habits didn't endear him to his co-workers either.

Did you mean Steve the Hippie Yippie? I don't think he did much. I mean he had a few good ideas like using Xerox PARC's mouse. Then he left Apple and threw his money at computer graphics division of Lucasfilm, which was spun off as Pixar. ChaChing! Steve Wozniak was the brains behind the machine. I can't remember the fella's name that taught them both how to market it. Overnight sensation in the Valley! I gotta' hand it to Jobs, though. He did return to Apple and brought them back from near bankruptcy with his Yuppie toys: The iMac, iTunes, iPod, iPhone, iPad, iMe, iMe, and the iMe. :p

That leads me to my next subject. Location, location, location. Where have we heard that before? Apple in the Valley and M$ in Seattle (Redmond) is a factor.

All the Yuppie photographers, film editors, artists, and so on all bought Macs. Why? They were better at graphics. And the Valley is close to Hollywood where there's an endless pit of $.

Bill Gates' mother was the one that introduced Bill to some IBM execs in Seattle (At her bridge club none the less) which lead him to the PC for big business. Why big business? Because the PCs are number crunchers.

So after all these years, the twain has met in a dual. Who will win? Stay tuned for the next episode.....

MS is no evil empire and Bill Gates was either in the right place at the right time or just a genius. Probably a combination of both.

Steve Jobs picked Apple up after being shown the door and turned it into what it is now. Whatever anyone thinks of MS or Apple they are in their own right two very successful companies.

Whilst you can probably achieve whatever you wanted to do with either a MS based system or an Apple one they have gone in different directions. MS has tended to lean towards the everyday computing scenario whereas Apple have gone up market. Apple is not a must have product unless you want to show it off to your friends. How well they (Apple) continue to do I think the jury is still out on that one especially since Steve Jobs passed on.

The problem MS has is one of direction. It probably knows where it wants to be but isn't really sure how to get there. I hope that their Win8 and phone/tablet combo is a success but it could just be to little to late. They may just be able to get Win8 semi accepted on the desktop/laptop community but personally I doubt it. Talking about the demise of the desktop/laptop reminds me of the 'Linux is almost there' comments. Linux has been 'almost there' for goodness knows how many years but until it is able to run the likes of Adobe software as easily as it runs in a MS/Apple environment then it will always be promises and more promises of just around the corner time.

I hope MS moves out of the bubble and offers a Classic UI for Win8 although I doubt it. It's going to be driven by dreaming of making several millions/billions of $$$'s from downloaded apps and cloud computing subscriptions. I also hope they will release a SP2 for Win7 containing several of the improvements that reportedly exist in Win8. Doubt that one as well as that would automatically remove any incentive to 'upgrade' to Win8.

I will not be upgrading to the Metro UI whilst my Win7 system is going fine. Throwing the toys out of the pram and moving to the fruit company is also a no go for me. It would be cost prohibitive. And Linux, well.....

My few cents worth.

Here Here!

I think the time is about right for a tablet that can work as a desktop. The market has had plenty of time to experiment with a hobbled OS on the ipad (that's what I call playskool), and now consumers can have a tablet that will be perfectly functional for drafting in word, power point, or excel -- heck, the surface even has a keyboard and track pad right there when you want them. I don't think the surface will be most user's primary work machine, but it'll be nice to feel that you can take your tablet on vacation to Hawaii and still knock out a memo if you have to.

That feels like more options to me, no fewer.
