I personally hate the metro look. I just completely disabled it on my laptop.

    Hi there

How did you do it -- some people might be interested.

The only 100% way I know of disabling Metro completely is to boot up any Linux distro. !!

I see also CokeRobot never answered my original question - which was if you were FORCED to use only metro (i.e no reverting back to the "classical desktop") how would you easily accomplish the task of translating say one document into 3 other languages when you can only run the application in SINGLE full screen metro mode.

Some newer developments though since this thread first appeared -- it might be possible in the future to run metro in re-sizeable (hopefully not fixed areas) windows - my preference would be to have these borderless too -- then with some decent applications these could be dynamically updating windows on a normal "workspace" rather like (but much better) than the old Vista Gadgets.

Even some classical apps could run in this way too -- so the distinction between Metro and "normal" apps becomes less important. Seems that windows 9 will be something on those lines.

    Cheers

I audit financial institutions. I work with numbers. Sometimes those numbers are long. Sometimes, the supporting documents I'm looking at are optically scanned pdfs that look like they have been run through a fax machine. That is if I'm lucky. The unlucky ones are when they are stored as .tiff files, hundreds and hundreds of tiff files, each file being exactly one page that I have to view with Picture Viewer. I assure you, flipping back and forth between two environments to make sure I've entered that 10 digit number correctly isn't going to fly. I work on a 14" laptop.

So spreadsheets, word docs, proprietary audit program running, tiff files, pdfs, IE, and windows explorer open all at once. You flash that full screen Metro screen in my face just once and I'm lost. The stuff I do isn't particularly interesting or memorable. My task at hand is just barely in my short-term memory. I do not require any assistance in forgetting what I was just doing.

I think the plan where I work is to move to Windows 8. I am dreading the transition. It wouldn't be so bad if we could customize it but my work laptop is locked up tighter than Fort Knox, I don't think i can even change the wallpaper without admin approval. I hope to God they meant Windows 8.1, at least there you can kind of hide Metro.

    Hi there

Congrats -- You are the ONLY person who seems to have understood the problem of Metro / Full screen when you need CONCURRENT windows -- I for example often have to translate ONE doc into often TWO other languages - and you need to see all 3 docs at the same time or copy data from different EXCEL worksheets into other one's / power point presentations or other documents.

Metro FULL SCREEN isn't appropriate to around 95% of stuff people do in the workplace -- but don't worry I think you'd get W8.1 not W8 which boots straight to desktop (which I'm sure a workplace will enable).

Future Metro apps in re-sizeable windows would be OK though.

    Cheers

Hiya, I just recently installed windows 8 but I seem to be having some real trouble with my mouse. I can use the mouse perfectly in Firefox, but when I go to use it in metro style apps it will change cursor when over button but when I go to click nothing happens. It works fine in the Start Menu...
Hi all I'm surprised to see that metro style gui and apps will only work if your screen resolution is 764 X 1028 or greater. Some smaller netbooks won't meet this requirement --which is odd since W8 is obviously destined to be used on smaller devices - such as SMALL tablets and maybe on mobile...
