Wait, from what I gather to make sense, the 40 dollar upgrade is for ANY Windows user to UPGRADE (not custom install) Windows 8? And the 15 dollar one if for people that buy a PC from June 2 to February?

Methinks some confusion may spur from this...

Yes the $39.99 is for all users XP/Vista/Windows7 no matter when the PC was purchased or if was built, the $15 is just for new PC's that purchased after June 2 that came with Windows 7 installed.

Irritatingly enough, I missed out on the Vista/Win 7 upgrade

Behind the $40 Windows 8 upgrade

Behind the $40 Windows 8 upgrade

There's a reason why Microsoft just pegged the price of a Windows 8 upgrade at $40. Several, actually

My friends have chided me for cheering on Bill Snyder's provocative suggestion: Blow it up, Ballmer: Give away the Surface for free. Although I figure Snyder got the wrong Steve -- Sinofsky's most likely the one in the driver's seat -- and the proposal is obviously not realistic, I admire the sentiment. Microsoft's one huge advantage in coming out with its own Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT hardware is pricing. And the lower the Steves can go, the more Metro's going to sizzle in the marketplace.

Okay so its says you can make a bootable disc with this upgrade if I want to start fresh, so my question is what if one day after I installed the win8 with the upgrade disc something goes wrong which requires me to reinstall the whole OS over again, will I be able to use this upgrade disc to reinstall it or will I have to purchase a whole new win8 disc with a new CD key?

Also if I upgrade and the OS doesn't run on my PC as well as I hoped will I be able to go back to Vista using my system recovery discs I burned without any problems? like needing a new CD key?

If I can do all the above will I be able to switch from Vista to wins 8 as many times as I wont without needing a new CD Key for OS's as long as I'm installing them both on the same system?

It won't be officially revealed until MS releases Win8 to the public.

From previous versions and recent rumors, yes you will be able to do a clean install from your Win8 upgrade disc.
You can re-install Vista as long as you have the original key, OEM's usually have the key load internally.
As long as you are installing on the same system, for OEM, you can re-install Vista/Win8.

Not sure how many options we have (there are more then one for sure) on this one but I would definitely do a system image (backup manager) after everything is fresh installed and working.

If something goes wrong after that: no problem, just boot and restore...
If something goes wrong during backup: no comment...
