25 Years: How the Web began

25 years ago there was the Internet, but there was no Web. Then, Tim Berners-Lee proposed creating an Internet-based hypertext system and the Web was on its way.

When I was a young man, we had it rough. We used to have to get up out of the shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick the road clean with our tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two with a bread knife and while we had the Internet we didn't have the Web. And, when you tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya!*

I used the Internet for years before there was a Web, but when Tim Berners-Lee proposed the Web, an Internet-based hypertext system, to his boss at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory, we didn't know it but we were on the brink of a revolution...

Hmm, I remember it this way:

In ancient Israel, it came to pass that atrader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a healthy young wife bythe name of Dorothy, who went by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comelywoman, large of breast, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she wasoften called, slangly, Amazon Dot Com.

And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far fromtown to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thytent?"

And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of afull camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?"
And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in betweento send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling youwho hath the best price. The sale can be made on the drums and delivery made byUriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all thegoods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent.

To prevent neighboring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying,Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was known as MustSend Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmitideas and pictures - Hebrew to The People (HTTP).
And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horseflytake to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich DominicanSybarites, or NERDS. And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the newriches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the realriches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. Indeed he did insist on drums tobe made that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks.
And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over byothers." And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as it cameto be known. He said, "We need a name that reflects what we are."
And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators.""YAHOO," said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named itYAHOO Dot Com.

Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid(GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around thecountryside.
It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything(GOOGLE).

That is how it all began. And that's the truth.

You cannot make up this stuff.

Can not take credit for this, found it on a different BBS

WELL, I was there..... Bulletin Boards were all the rage, but to access one not on your own telephone exchange meant Long Distance charges.

Big companies, like NCR, the company I worked for paid the freight, so their computers could talk from one city to another, all over the US.

To send an email to someone across the country, I would post my message on a local Bulletin Board and then sometime during the night, that message would be sent over the telephone lines, to another bulletin board in the recipients town.
I'm not just sure exactly when the WWW first started being used for email, but AOL was my first email provider. The rest is history.

I just wonder who pays the electric bill for all those thousands of Nodes that comprise the internet. ???

As I remember, the U.S. military turned over it's phone-line based inter-military-base communications grid to the education sector, I.E. colleges and local school service units. I used to log in to my community college bulletin board, and use NebLink (Nebraska) to email my sister working at the Educational Service Unit in another city. Shortly after, I gave up my Commodore 128, for a Win95 PC, with IE and a 56K modem. The number of websites was limited, but grew exponentially.......
